Fascinating book of suspense set in the late 1800's. It revolves around the banking industry at that time, corruption, crime and drama that surrounded the characters involved. A classic good wins over evil in the end. Although during the story it seemed like the evil people kept getting all the breaks...so it kept me guessing how it was going to turn out. 568 pages and I actually finished in a day... stayed up til 4am this morning...so it must have been good!

I couldn't put this book down! While the plot of the book focuses on two brothers who killed their brother's wife and baby, it primarily examines the life and beliefs of Mormon Fundamentalists. I did skip a few parts, I will admit, but most of the book is fascinating.

It pains me to give a book Elizabeth Scott wrote such a low rating, but "as i wake" was such a disjointed mess I really don't have a choice. At first I thought the writing was so choppy because it's being narrated by Ava, who wakes up not knowing who she is or anyone around her. I imagine that's how someone with amnesia would feel and that was Scott's motivation, but to write the whole book this way was hard for a reader (this reader at least) to not let the confusion cause you to be frustrated. It really took away from the story, which even after finishing I'm not clear on. Was this paranormal, sci-fi, alternate universe? Very unclear on that. To me Scott's gift is how she writes emotions and the interactions between her characters-friendships, family and potential loves. I caught glimpses of this in a few scenes between Ava and Morgan, reminding me why I love her writing, but it wasn't enough. Not even close to enough to forgive the confusing plot. Here's an example: "He is nothing to look at, and yet I can't stop looking at him. There is something beautiful in how his face is made, how all the tiny flaws blend together into something more perfect than perfection could ever be." Because of lines like that, she's still one of my fav authors and I applaud her for stepping outside her box and trying something new. It just didn't work for me.

Patti Smith has had the most amazing life. She hung out with Janis Joplin, had affairs with the like of Sam Shepherd (who cast her in a play), was tutored by William Burroughs and most famously, was the early lover and best friend of artist Robert Maplethorpe. She writes lyrically here about her time with Maplethorpe when they were just starting out as fledgling artists in NYC. The lyrical writing part is both a positive and a problem She is a poet and she spends more time constructing the words then she always does with the story line, so I was often left wanting more detail. Still, an excellent book and a fun read.
