Such a 'rattling god tale'! A classic that had passed me by, but I so enjoyed it. What a glimpse we get into small-town American life in the 19th century, and the wily and irrepressible Tom and friends growing up together. I salute Mark Twain for the literary innovation this was at the time, the exciting plot, believable characters and sympathetic 'commentary'.

Nicole Krauss writes beautifully... but this book struck me as just too similar to Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, both by Krauss's husband, Jonathan Safran Foer. Foer is one of my very favorite contemporary writers, and I very much hope that's not just because I happened to read his books before I read his wife's. I love the work of Park Slope's most beloved literary couple... I just wish they wouldn't keep writing the same books. ps... Nicole Krauss wrote a lovely and moving essay about walking in the city that was in today's NY Times (8/19/07). After I read the essay, I felt bad for being so bitter about her novel.

Loved it. I kept seeing here that this was a good series and I am glad I tried it (I also listened about BDB -- way great!). I'm just beginning this series -- and I was able to get right into it. Nice introduction to the Guild Hunter world. In this novella we're introduced to Ashwini (Hunter) and Janvier (Vamp) who team up to collect a wayward vamp and bring her back to the Angel that owns her contract. Although that is the basic synopsis of the book those words can't convey the strength of the characters and depth of the world, or the easy relationships and interactions of the characters. From the first page you were in the world there wasn't a lot of introduction and slow builds. It is a quick read that you can do in one sitting. The chemistry of the main H/H was evident and smoldering -- too bad it wasn't a HEA I would have enjoyed knowing more about them. But I guess they were just too much for a full length novel -a glimpse is all we got. From page one it was easy to be in this world - the characters were full blown, and their conversation gave us direct insight into the foundation and rules for this world. The secondary characters also had strong voices and were distinct and could do well in other books of the series - I hope to meet them again. As with all vampire worlds this series has their own rules and these rules are fun!

Fuck this book.

I just couldn't get into this. 4 characters plus the mom was just too many for me to keep up with. I couldn't remember who was who and who was married to/dating who. Why 4 daughters? It's just too many. Maybe if they each had an entire chapter or two or it was broken down into one section per character it would have been easier for me to read. It had one page and then another character would tell her story at the bottom of the same page.
