Berenson does a good job of staying away from the controversial political issues and focuses on the fictional intrigue. He incorporates a smart interpretation of Islam and makes John's struggles with faith believable. Overall, this is a good read and I'm willing to give Number 2 a shot.

i’ll try not to give too much away, because most of this book questions and slowly reveals a hidden purpose. it centers around kathy, ruth, and tommy, three students at an exclusive boarding school in england. as you learn more about their daily lives and career path after graduating, you realize something is off. the discovery process is the main driving force behind the book, and it can get frustrating for the reader since the author hints at this big secret for so long, so once you find out, it’s annoying he drew it out that long. i watched the movie based on this book after i finished reading, and it’s a classic case of book>film. ishiguro’s style of revealing the students’ true purpose that i found frustrating before proved to be genius when the film gave away too much at once. all of that subtlety and mystery was gone. the story isn’t particularly plot driven, so the as a film it was kind of dull. i did love carey mulligan in that role though - just the right amount of brooding - and andrew garfield is not hard on the eyes. the verdict: book gets a b+ for an interesting writing style, movie gets a b- for being rather boring.

I bought this book in Krakow-- a great snapshot of some of the best poets produced by Poland in the last century. Milosz, Gombrowicz, Zagajewski, Zbigniew Herbet, and many people I have never heard of before are included. Poland had a pretty rough go of it in the 20th century, but in spite of all the censorship, war, bloodletting and communist bootheels, some pretty amazing, beautiful, humanistic work managed to come to light.

This book was amazing!! My mother said it's one of the best books she's ever read. (I totally agree!) A coworker of mine said "you'll feel like a putz after reading this book, since nothing bad that you could ever experience would be half as bad as the author's experiences." (I totally agree with that one too, although I feel like the ending was uplifting enough.) My only complaint with this book is that it leaves you hanging. You get all the way through this wonderful journey of McCourt childhood, and you don't get to see what happened to the McCourts! Not even a line of "and they lived happily ever after"! There's a sequel out there, "T'is," which I guess I'll just have to read to hear the rest of the story. Look for that review in the not-so-distant future.

Well, Eona is a very special candidate. She can see not only the Rat Dragon but all of the other Dragons. A very rare and unique skill. Eon is a book that I really regret not reading before. I still don't understand why I waited so long to get my hands on it. This is an intense reading filled with twists. Eon gets from one trouble into another and it never stops!. I remember thinking over and over again "Oh my God! can this get any worse?' and "Holy...! No way!!". I was biting my nails all the way through this read. It is incredible how this book never stopped surprising me. I think is the first time I read a character such as Eon. Yes, she is bad ass, she is smart and she also has a limp and she is very complex. Eon, during the whole story, is constantly fighting her own nature. She's been raised in a world where being a woman means you are, by nature, in a low status. The paradox of being so little but blessed with such great power and skill is, in Eon's world, beyond every body's understanding. Eon constantly denies to embrace her true nature and this was one of the themes I most enjoyed to see evolve. There are other very interesting characters such as Lady Dela (I live her to you to discover who she is, I am not giving anything away! but believe, she is one of my favorite in the story) We also have Chart and her mother, whose loyalty and devotion was a mother role for Eon. The Emperor and his son Kygo. Ryko, the Master, Dillon and Lord Ido. Gosh Lord Ido! I hate him with all my heart I could say so many hateful things towards him, but since my blog "hate free" I will just say that Lord Ido is just beyond redemption. Alison Goodman descriptions stimulated all of my senses. The beauty of places, the texture of silk, the scent of incense, Jasmin, and orange blossom. The flavor of tea and bean buns. The clashing of bloody swords. I can not praise Alison's Goodman's writing style in the way she deserves it. But I need to say those three simple words can always say more than a thousand; I love it! As a book lover, I am proud to have this book in my shelf. As a reader, I am prouder to have finally decided to read it.The last two sentences, describe the way I feel towards this book. I think, I need to say no more.
