Makes up with brilliance for what he lacks in modesty and maturity.

This is a powerful story. A drama set in, you guessed it, Montana in 1948. It's told from the point of view of a 12 year boy, son of the town sheriff, who learns of his uncles' crimes against members of the nearby native american community. great writing, intense story and an ending that i'm still processing.

Loved it all except the second-to-last story. Skip that one.

The story is remarkable, but the book is not very well-written and boring at times.

Depressing stuff, this. It's quite outdated, but I imagine the conditions are the same, if not worse. Not the book to make you proud to be an American. Eye-opening to say the least.

Simple: This book should be required reading for every human. It concisely describes the most powerful human decision making engine, which our culture refuses to acknowledge, the shadow, which has been identified as the "id" and "super-ego" by Freud and the "collective unconscious" by a smarter guy named Carl Jung, who was one of Freuds students, but discarded all the psychosis of Freud and framed it in a far more intuitive way. Bly, a great poet/writer, describes the power we project onto others that should rightfully be our own. The projection looks ugly, and is upsetting, when projected and witnessed, but can become our best energy when reclaimed. Anyone who would like to develop a new understanding of how they interact with others will enjoy this book, but more it's just nice to read. He describes the process of becoming a mere "slice" by age twenty, after staring off in life as an infant with a 360' personality. Both prose and poetry, it's an excellent read, takes about two hours to get through, and perhaps a lifetime to process. Great book.

No Country for Old Men is an adaptation of the Coen Brothers movie of the same name. After the Coens won Best Picture, McCarthy watched the movie on a bootleg DVD and wrote the novel, then submitted it to Knopf, whose editors don't often go out to the movies. McCarthy has added several scenes that weren't in the movie and changed many details, which I think is authorial umbrage of the worst sort. Take that, Harry Potter slash fiction. McCarthy's dialogue is the main draw here, and it's a pretty quick read.

I resisted----I really did. I don't know why, really, because it is as everyone says: beautiful and terrible; up lifting and depressing; hopeful and hopeless. Much of it will remain with me, too. No spoilers here for the 2 of you who haven't read this book yet (you know who you are!). I'm not sure I want to rush out and see the movie, but now I can! Now I want to know what glass coated kite string looks like...and I'm ready to read A Thousand Splendid Suns!

A feel for what life was like in pre world war II Germany. Suspenseful, good read.
