I expected this book to be a more sappy modern-day romantic love-lost type of story, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book was well written, and I loved following the little budding relationship in it's simplest, purest way. It told the story without sounding condescending, or pointing fingers. I was nervous, near the end, that it woudln't end like I wanted it to, with so few pages to go. Without spoiling it, I was quite pleased. There were times reading the book that my jaw would literally drop. Great writing, great story.

I can't really remember when i read this; a few years ago. This was at the height of the hate portion of my love/hate relationship with Hemingway. I felt nothing for the characters and felt their relationship was completely unbelievable.

Two stories that intertwine can sometimes be confusing, but these two stories combine pretty well. The "present day" is 1936, and Abilene is left in a Kansas town with a bootlegging substitute preacher while her father works on the railroad. Abilene meets the local mystical woman who tells stories about the town in 1918. Abilene hopes to learn more about her father through these stories, but it's not until the end that she understands the whole picture. The novel started out slow and it took me a while to really get rolling, but this is a good tale about history, family, and community. There's some mystery, some trickery and lots of secrets to be uncovered.
