Wow. I am either becoming a more mature reader, or my ability to pick them (and the friends whose advise I take on what to read) has much improved. This is such a sweet story (although rife with tragedy). You just know, in the end it has to work out. I must admire Ms. Gruen for her ability to write men. (I find it akin to Chris Cleave and Little Bee). I found myself consistently forgetting that this novel was written by a woman. Few can do so with equal skill. This also proves what fabulous work can come from a small bit of passion and a good deal of research. In the afterword, Ms. Gruen admits that she had another book project going until she read a Chicago Tribune article about circuses. If this book doesn't have you cheering for the beleaguered and the underdog, you may need to re-locate your soul.

I really enjoyed this book. It was one of the first books we read for the CHA book club. I love stories about the afterlife. This one was only partly about the afterlife, but fortunately, the rest of the book was interesting too.

Awesome addition to the series! This is unquestionably my favorite series. This addition really focuses on Eve and her division, her men, how they work together and how Eve has had her effect on them. The ending was emotional couldn't help but get teared up. Love every character in this series.

Not my favorite of Charlaine Harris' books. But then again, there was no supernatural element to this mystery novel. And that is important (to me).

Jessica Valenti does a great job exposing the purity myth - the idea that women should be judged by their sexuality, and are impure if they rebel against "traditional" gender roles in any way - and its consequences. I really like how she ties together many of the problems that women face - the virgin/whore dichotomy, rape culture, victim blaming - and presents them as all issues that are related to the idea that when women are judged by a standard of purity that relates to sexual activity, it hurts everyone.

I'm sad. This was book I was supposed to read for school, but I didn't remember if I did or not. I remember parts of the story but as I was reading everything was slowly coming back. I could hear my teacher's voice as he read this to us. In the last chapter before the ending, I remembered what happened. So heartbreaking :(

I'm still unsure how to review and rate this book, but here's my best shot! It is a book clearly intended for a middle grade audience, but I personally felt that at times the tone and themes seemed much more adult to me. All in all, I did find it to be entertaining to read. Here's the story in brief: Kirsten is beginning 7th grade with trepidation, low self-confidence, and an extra 30 pounds she did not have last year. Her best friend Rory seems more concerned with hanging with the popular girls than with her, and her parents appear to be on the verge of divorce. Walker is a new boy at the school, and he soon discovers that he just doesn't quite fit in with the students there. When he and Kirsten begin a friendship, things begin to look a bit brighter...until Kirsten unearths a secret that could change both their lives. The book alternates between the viewpoints of Kirsten (who is white--I generally wouldn't report this, but racism and prejudice are major threads throughout the book) and Walker (who is black). I thought Choldenko did an excellent job capturing their unique voices. Kirsten is especially funny and clever as a narrator. The middle-school setting is very vivid and realistic. The book does deal with pretty adult themes, like racism, classism, prejudice, and marital discord. In my opinion and experience, some middle grade readers will not understand these themes, which are very subtly woven throughout the story. Advanced readers ages 12/13 and up will likely enjoy this one if they like realistic fiction stories with a school setting.

I read this years ago, perhaps 9 or 10, because a friend said that "everyone ought to read this book." Sigh. What a waste of time...Heinlein trotting out his tired themes of self-sufficiency, free love (he really was a sex-obsessed man)and the natural superiority of certain types of intellectuals. I'm sure he considered himself a perfect example of the type. Have done my very best to forget as many of the details as possible. Shame I can't forget that I read it.

I inhaled this book in less than 24 hours. Couldn't put it down. I liked "If I Stay" but not as much as this follow up. Adam seems a bit more of a complicated character compared to Mia, even though she wen through the trauma of loosing her family. I didn't know how I wanted this to end but I loved the way it did. Ps The lyrics to Collateral Damage were haunting!!

this true story about a daughter that suffers due to her family and the treatment they recieve from her. Adeline suffers the abuse of her stepmother just because she is the youngest and is defenseless. her father doesn't defend her an she feels that she is not loved. she is alone and only has her aunt baba that rewards and praises her. she feels alone and shares her sad story of ehr life as a unwanted child. She tells us how she was unimportant and her family took no notice for her. she was always infirior and was treated unfairly. this story brought me to tears when she writes about how her duck is killed and that duck was her only friend. the style that it's written in is so vivid and i feel her pain. she writes how she cried and when her duck died she felt so lonely and it made me cry and think about how good i have it. i felt so sorry for her and i wondered how she made it through. i was thankful for the loving family i have and it made me realize that ny life is pretty good compared to what she went through.
