Saw this book while in Guam. It is written by a French Author pre-Vietnam war. The book discusses how France failed as a "occupying" nation and how Vietnam became a hornets nest that they could not control. We all know the history of America's involvement in Vietnam, but I think it a good book to be read in trying understand how we are repeating FRENCH history in our own occupation of Iraq. Funny how we mock the French but seem to have missed one of the most important lessons they had taught us. Marc, I'd imagine this book is up your alley.

Some new insight in edition 2.0 as to how the changes discussed in the previous edition of the book are materializing faster than expected. Read July 2011

I picked this book up in Tel Aviv on my way to Istanbul and I just haven't gotten around to reading it yet but it's quite amazing, I'm not really sure what's going on but I feel like I'm back in Turkey which has to be a good endorsement!

Great story. Would have really liked it, if it had not been read by the author. Yikes.

If you love baseball, then you'll probably like this book. There is a story here behind all the baseball games and jargon, but if you're not familiar with the terms you might get a little lost. Boys and girls who like baseball/sports will appreciate it. Hutch is a huge baseball fan and hardworking ball player, I liked his sportsmanship and work ethic. He has a hard time relating to and appreciating his dad, but he finally gets it in the end, I thought it could have happened sooner, since Hutch is such a bright kid. It just goes to show you that the people you care most about are the people you mistreat the most.

This was a very unsettling and tragically funny set of stories. I don't know what was really likeable about them, but I did indeed enjoy most of them. Some ended so abruptly that it left a bad taste in my mouth, but some were so spot on with matching my sense of humor. Tower's settings and characters were vivid creations and glimpses into the everyday downtrodden demographic. My favorite was the last story, which shares a title with the entire collection. It had me in fits of giggles imagining looters and pillagers with morals and boundaries. However, this is not something I'd recommend to 99% of the people who come into the library.

Enjoyable, quick read. I enjoyed the references to the Arizona landscape. Spinelli's writing style is descriptive, but not wordy. I liked that it was from the perspective of a teenage boy looking back on this relationship, so the telling was matter-of-fact and wise through hindsight. I would recommend this to anyone who went to high school!

Read April 2009. Review of audiobook January 2011: I really love that Briggs is writing a separate series about Charles and his new mate Anna. Word for new readers though, this story will make a lot more sense if you read the novella in On The Prowl first as it is the story of Charles and Anna's meeting and falling in with one another. This new series gives you a whole new insight about Charles. In the Mercy books he is merely Bran's 2nd son that is the packs enforcer, and handles all their finances. You know he is scary, of Indian descent, and a killer and that's about it. In this book we learn about his emotions, his feeling about being his father's assassin, his loneliness, and so much more. We also meet Anna who is an Omega werewolf, who has been brutalized for the entire time that she has been a wolf by her past pack. In the novella the 2 meet and their wolves decide immediately that they are meant to be mates much to their human half's surprise and embarrassment. I love these characters because they are both so incredibly complex and each have so many freaking issues to sort out and deal with. They are constantly walking on egg shells with one another yet are making their relationship work and come to love and appreciate one another. My other favorite part of this book is that we learn so freaking much about Bran. Oh Bran. I love you! You are scary, but not, powerful but don't show it, funny in an understated way, and so caring for those under you. We never got to learn about Bran's past from the Mercy novels, and now know about how he and Samuel became wolves and their family in Wales. The plot of this book is awesome in that you learn so much about witches and witchcraft in this universe. The Mercy books kind of address these issues but not to this extent. And it really illustrates the time span you are dealing with hen werewolves are involved. This is a fantastic new series from Briggs that I will certainly continue to enjoy!

I loved this book I literally cried at how unfair it was. Even though it was a genre I usually wouldn't be into I really adored this book and am avidly looking forward to the next book dying a little bit to know if things will work out for the two. I really felt in touch with both characters and how unfair thier predicament was. I wanted so muc for both of them to be able to have their love. The imagry in the book was stunning and felt like I was right their with the characters shadowing just behind them as they moved through the story. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
