The second book took me awhile to get around to reading. But when I started it, I really felt compelled to finish it inside a week. I think Rowling's writing (or editing) improved from the first book and the characters seemed more interesting.

I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews on this one and personally, I really enjoyed this book. I guess I enjoyed it most for the fact that it was completely different from any other NS book I've read. If I can't put it down, it gets 5 stars from me!

Here is where Moore lost me. He has to deal with DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths housecleaning (go wikipedia it if you're that curious). It's all well and good for the fictional continuity, I suppose, but it doesn't make for a particularly compelling storyline.

I read a version of the Iliad and the Oddessy when I was about 10 and have been vaguely interested in Greek Myths since then. I actually bought this for the Gruesome Twosome but they appear not to be interested at all, even the one who is reading the Percy Jackson series - which is why I finally read this one. What a bloodthirsty lot those Greek Gods were/are! This one doesn't have the story about the children being eaten by their dad (by mistake) but it does have a few other violent ones and a very short account of the siege of Troy. All in all not bad, a nice quick bedtime read. But now I think I'll finally have to give my grown-up versions of the Iliad and the Oddessy a spin.

Offers a different perspective of World War I--from the Austro-Hungarian perspective as told through three generations of soldiers. Parts are very compelling (the grandson's gambling addiction, for example) and some parts are far less successful. Pervading throughout is a feeling of homesickness--a word that encompasses so much.

In both of his other books and this one, Ondaatje shifts the time of the story. Sometimes I like this, but in this book I didn't. This time, it was too hard to see the connections between events that might be more than a hundred years apart. His characters are as vivid as ever, but it seemed more like two or even three different books. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to have enjoyed it.
