I have read this book so many times. Once I start it, I absolutely can't put it down. I started out borrowing it from my library all the time, until finally I found my own copy. It's my favorite book by Avi, who is truly a very gifted storyteller. The book focuses on 13-year-old Charlotte Doyle, making the passage (alone) from England to Providence, Rhode Island, to be reunited with her family. They've taken care of all the arrangements, booking her passage aboard the Seahawk. But from the moment she first steps on board, Charlotte senses that there is danger on the ship. There are secrets, betrayals, murders, and mutinies--all giving this thrilling high seas mystery a spot on the shelf! The characters are very vivid--from Charlotte's quiet friend, Zachariah, to the commanding and cruel Captain Jaggery. Avi spins his magic.

** spoiler alert ** The bog for squickiness. This was fine when not overly sexualized and since you cannot go a single chapter without someone thinking about sex or actually doing it, not all that much fun. I have read and liked this duo's KATE DANIELS series, which is why I did not realize that is shelved under "romance" only. I know better now. I will finish this series out, but then I am putting a good solid distance between me and "romantic" fantasy. We are not comfortable around one another. So, very sexualized, far more than Kate (which is often trying enough). Jack and George were easily my favorite thing about the book. I really hope that we will get to see more of them. They have grown up a great deal, but they still have a ways to go. You know I love siblings. It would be nice to get to see more of Rose/Declan and Declan and William interacting. At least William and Cerise got to do something here. Kaldar and Audrey were fine when they were not making out or thinking about making out, which was 70% of the time. Not very compelling as a story. And does Spider ever die? Sheesh.

Careful language, intriguing plot - but also a bit disturbing for me. Of course, it's probably good to be disturbed, but heads-up that this has Faulkner-ish sexual abuse (I love Faulkner, but this felt less symbolic and more just about sexual abuse)... I called Lucky throughout, which helped a lot, but she had read it probably 6 months before me. I wish I had been in a class or a reading group just to be able to talk about all the ideas and emotions it brings up.

"Bedarf es in der heutigen Zeit wirklich eines solchen Buches? Ist Kultur denn nicht „Big Brother“ und das „Dschungel-Camp“? Der Rest ist doch nur noch ein Randgruppenphänomen. So einfach ist es aber anscheinend doch nicht. Den beiden Co-Autoren, Feuilletonisten der SZ und der FAZ (jetzt selbständig), liegen die schönen Künste ebenso wie das Fernsehen am Herzen. Deshalb wird neben der bildenden Kunst, Architektur, Malerei, Bildhauerei und Photographie, der Darstellenden Kunst, Oper, Operette, Theater und Ballet, der Musik, vom klassischen Konzert bis zum Jazz, auch dem letztern mehrere Kapitel gewidmet. Jeder Bereich wird in seiner Entwicklung und seinen Epochen kurz angerissen, die Autoren beklagen diese Kürze auch in ihrem Nachwort, aber dennoch informativ und, dies ist hervorzuheben, sehr unterhaltsam. Zur eingangs gestellten Frage. Ja, es bedarf eines solchen Buches, allzu viele lassen sich durch Äußerlichkeiten, früher hieß es Schwellenangst, von Museen, Theatern, Ausstellungen usw. abhalten, teilweise aus Bequemlichkeit, aber zum großen Teil aus einer Art Furcht, gepaart mit Unverständnis. Dem kann nicht mit hochtrabenden Erläuterungen abgeholfen werden, dies verstärkt nur noch das Vorurteil, hier muß Pragmatismus herrschen. Das Buch liegt voll auf dieser Linie, Fernsehen ist demnach auch Kultur, allerdings sollte man zu dieser Erkenntnis den Begriff etwas weiträumiger auslegen."

I'm still forming my opinions about this book. I enjoyed the story and looked forward to picking it up. It was an enjoyable read, even in the sad parts. I guess it's one of those books that I feel like should have left me pondering greater things in life and reminded me of the cruelty and hope in all humans. But, alas, much to the dismay of some of my gfs out there, I'm sure, I may have picked this book up when I was just in the mood for a good story and let my deeper soul rest a little. Overall, it was very good and I look forward to seeing the film. I have never seen it...
