The book is well-written. Though going backwards so much in a story is a literary no-no, he doesn't do terribly. There were phrases and lines I will not forget, such as "... feminine elaborations...." on page 24. It is as the professional reviews call, an ambitious novel. The character development was well-done. I knew each character, and when it got to the end, I was thinking it was the author who didn't understand the character as well as I did. I'll get to that in a minute. Other good things.... He's really inventive with imagery. When he describe the scenes where Dr. Phil's family was massacred, I was astounded at how vivid and eloquent the scenes were! Almost movie like in my mind's eye. I applaud any author who is able to court poetic imagery to fictional prose! So... what didn't I like? I felt there were few conventions. In describing the innocent and awkward love affair between the brother and sister, it reminded me of Harry Potter and other such books. There's an over-arching romantic aroma to the book that can get too strong and drawn out. The ending rather annoyed me, and I thought he conceded it to publisher's whims. For one thing, Father Mike would NOT have done what he did. There was no development for it! It was such a surprise, it was maddening. And the brief descriptions the author made during the car chase, (on father mike's mind was not godly thoughts and so on), where indicators that the author got HASTY! And the fact that the father died? What? That was sacrilege. The story does not need such roller-coaster plot devices so late in the goddamn novel! And I hated the utter absence of Desdemona from the book! I kept rereading the last passage she was mentioned to find out if I glanced over a sentence that stated she died. And it seems contrary to Cal's omniscient conscious he should not mention Desdemona because he forgot about her yet knew things he had no business knowing! I won't hate on Eugenides with his fantasy narrator. I thought the descriptions Cal gave of things she didn't know to be tasteful and progressive for the novel. I am not going to say, "Oh, he should have been more naturalistic or whatever" because he didn't do it badly. Anyway, good book. I loved it up to the ending, which was bland and irrelevant.

What a totally disappointing book. Begun at 11:00 on a train and finished by the time I returned home at 6:00, it really is that thin despite the 500 or so pages. The basic premise of the story is that a secret cult worships at Stonehenge or some other underground version of it and requires sacrifices. They obtain sacrifices; the police become involved; that's it. Secret cults... Ancient settings... an academic unwittingly involved in their machinations. Did someone give Sam Christer the how-to-write-a-Dan-Brown-novel kit for Christmas? Chapters rarely extended more than 2 pages and there was almost no development of setting, visualisation or atmosphere within them; the plot really is paper thin to non-existent; every so-called twist was so patently obvious and clumsily handled that everything was predictable. What can save a poorly plotted novel is character. The novel as a genre gifts to the writer the space needed to create characters who are three-dimensional, realistic, capable of being identified with and emphathised with. Christer didn't even try. And for some unknown reason Christer decided to write in the present tense. Why? It added nothing to the plot; it could have made visual descriptions more vivid, but he hadn't included any; it was just, well, odd! Overall: A good pace meant that I didn't waste more than a day on the book; Derivative premise, under-developed characters, no atmosphere, no tension, no style did mean that it was a day totally wasted!
