I found it horrible to start with.. sickening almost.. then i warmed to the efforts of the author to redeem himself as he understood it... theme of addiction as a genetic disorder vs addiction as a choice interested me..... was most interested in the journey to a a new identity, the discourse on dignity, self acceptace and the use of Tao references...

One of several of Moore's books that I ended up laughing out loud at on an airplane....a must-read!

This is a great book. I love self-deprecating autobiographical works, and Greeny does this with panache. I appreciate that he opened himself up in a meaningful way. And how he finds something meaningful in something meaningless.

I am amused by the review that calls this book "The Prophet of Yawnwood", and unfortunately I agree. I was pretty disappointed by this third book in the Ember series. The first book is excellent and the second is still interesting; this one is just dull and preachy. Worse than that, the story is only tangentially related to the rest of the series, so much so that I have a hard time even calling it a prequel. The setting (a major strength in the rest of the series) is pre-apocalypse and sadly unremarkable. Even without comparing to the other Ember books, the book is pretty weak on its own. The protagonists are unrealistic children. The villains aren't that scary. (view spoiler) Mysteries are introduced, but ultimately just remain mysterious, and do not clearly lead to the fascinating, yet never explored, creation of Ember. I have to admit that the cover is pretty cool though. I look forward to returning to Lina and Doon's story in The Diamond of Darkhold.

I saw the Dateline episode about this guy. However, I think Dateline focused more on the disappearance of John and Linda Sohus rather than the minute details of all the identities "Clark Rockefeller" created. So I was glad that this book went further into how Clark started off as Christian in Germany and how he made his way to America and then "made" his way in America. You feel sorry for all the people he duped throughout the years and wonder how no one could see through his ruses, but at the same time, what if you were in their situation? The guy is a psychopath and psychopaths are very good at fooling people.

Read my requisite 50 pages, and am putting this one down. I may not pick it up again. What makes this harder is that the elements are THERE. It's like a Disney movie version of a romance novel, with a caring and dedicated hero, a damsel determined to be rescued one way or the other, and a whole host of very amusing sidekicks. I really wanted to like this one, especially after I very much enjoyed the author's debut novel, Spirited Away. I mean, come on, it's a romance novel. Not just a romance novel, but one of THOSE romance novels. The kind that you know ahead of time is going to be mushy and implausible, but hey it fills a gap in our lives, right? It's not like I was going into this with particularly high standards. Just looking for a fun read. So I honestly, wanted to like this. But Cindy, oh Cindy, where is your editor? Someone really should have told you that we readers can only take so many sayings of "twas" and "betwixt" and "I vow". And a hero can be attractive without constantly reminding the reader that he would make Hugh Jackman look plain in comparison. Really, it's true! This novel was sent out before its time. I know this author can write. But I think this one was put together with less care, and that's a bummer. Edit: Finally read the whole thing, but unfortunately I have to stand by my original review. It was sweet, but lacked substance. The ending was happily ever after with bonus sparkles.
