In this longwinded tail you will spend many pages with scholarly rapscallions whose employment of magic is preceded by hours of debate that would make members of today's parliament feel factitious. If you do get around to reading this word-monster, word on the street is that Johnny Depp is in talks to play the Raven King. I feel like casting anyone other than Macaulay Culkin would be a great injustice to Susanna Clarke's flamboyant epic.

I enjoy all the Harry Potters and can't seem to put them down, but this was my least favorite of the series. School was difficult for Harry in this year. Everyone doubted him, except his close friends, and he was labeled as a liar. Because of this, I found myself frustrated while reading it.

I read this first in 2002 and second in June 2004. It's the best of McCarthy's old westerns and arguably his best overall. It's my favorite. The horror story of manifest destiny and the genocide committed by Americans against indigenous peoples. I wrote a fan letter to McCarthy and told him this would make a good film. He didn't write back. Apparently, he doesn't like to talk much to fans or anyone. It's a good book.

** spoiler alert ** I really want to give this book a higher rating just because I liked "Passion" so much. However, this one just wasn't as good. Many times I found myself confused about references to characters and felt I needed to refer back to "Passion" to keep the story straight. I still don't understand what Sarah's problem with her mother is but maybe that will be resolved in the next book?

I just finished this book the other day. Spending all day at the hospital (Ben's gallbladder surgery) sure helped me get through it faster. It was an engrossing read, but I was disturbed by some of the events that happened in this book. I found myself shocked, disgusted, bewildered, surprised, and angry at some of the things that went on within the characters lives. I did not really like some of the choices that the characters made. I think they could have behaved a little more compassionately towards each other. It was definitely a sad book.
