I was terribly disappointed with BFI’s JAWS by Antonia Quirke. Quirke’s approach was very heavy handed; consistently attributing subtext to the film without giving evidence (for one, insisting that Ellen Brody was contemplating divorce, essentially from scene one of the movie…a plot that was in the Benchley book, but not in the film). Huge swaths of this book was written in a strange, novelization style, voicing strange, tangental thoughts from the characters. And a poorly written novelization at that. There’s some interesting tidbits here, but overall, a huge disappointment.

This is a good, general introduction to the gold rush. For elementary school I think it works alone and would be all you need (unless you live in California and want to take it further). For middle school you may or may not want to add more. While not super engaging, it lays out what happens in a clear manner. It's not boring, it's just not WOW! We read two books on the gold rush, and I much preferred this one.

Castaneda books were very popular when I was an undergraduate, and when I first started teaching in the 1970s. I remember reading all three and being amused and confused. I suspect I was mostly interested in the author's descriptions of his experiences with peyote. Years have passed, and I revisited A Separate Reality after a friend's adult son passed away. I saw imagery and a quote from Castaneda in his artwork, and thought this might be a time to see what I could learn from the book. What a difference all those years of living made in my interest and understanding! I was fascinated in the student and mentor's different ways of perceiving the world, and in the ongoing conversation they have about the differences between looking and really seeing, between an intellectual understanding of the world and and experiential understanding. This time I felt Don Juan had something to teach me, not just Carlos, about living life as fully aware as possible, with intention, and respect for death, that comes for each of us.

I fancy myself an armchair scientist, and Bryson's book on the history of human existance and how we came to know the things we do, was fascinating. Bryson delves into the history of how humans figured stuff out, giving credit where credit is due. It is obvious that Bryson is fascinated with his subject matter and did a great amount of research for the book. His style of writing is clear and succinct, and makes it easy for the avererage layperson to understand. Of course, since the book was published in 2003 there is some outdated material - I will quote the end of chapter 2: "Which is why perhaps it is good news that in February 1999 the International Astronomical Union ruled officially that Pluto is a planet. The universe is a big and lonely place. We can do with all the neighbors we can get." Oh, well. Science moves on quickly and textbooks are outdated the moment they are published. Even so, the book is a great source for a myriad of topics - Earth science, evolutionary history, cosmology, physics, chemisty, and biology. Through it all I was reminded about how even though humans might be a miracle of nature, we have made a mess of our planet and aren't as superior/invincible as we think we are.
John. John, John, John. I love you. You're my favorite actor and my favorite singer. But honey, you can't read audio books. At all. I should be able to tell the difference between dialogue and exposition, and you...no. Please refrain from trying again. It didn't help that all the reasons I gave the book version five stars were edited out of this version.

If I had my way, this zine would be handed out to every school kid in America some time around 6th grade. Good info packed into a handsome package.

Not my favorite Grisham. I think it was his way of making a political statement against the Death Penalty.

I wouldn't call this the most enlightening book I've ever read, but it was definitely entertaining. Worth a read if you need something not-too-heavy.
Great book for any small-business owner
