A decent romance, but I prefer Laura Griffin for my "romantic thriller" series. These characters never felt particularly deep, their development and the romance was predictable.

This one was between 2-3 stars, but I decided to be generous. Loved Fablehaven, thought this one was so-so. I think I have a harder time getting into books that are set in other worlds. It was a diverting read, but not one that I'm going to go out and buy. Plus, it seemed to me that the characters were a lot older than their stated ages. I don't know any 13 year old boys who act and talk like that. I would have believed it more if he was a junior or a senior.

This was written later than The Joy Luck Club, and I think that definitely shows in the quality of the writing and the structure of the novel. The sometimes cloying sentimentality of that book is not as much in evidence here, and the way the storyline falls into place is much more easy to follow. The pacing of the book is very, very slow, however. It's 400+ pages in a large format paperback, but feels much longer. In some respects, I liked this; it allowed us to see more of the world of China in the 1920s through to the 40s, which is really unimaginably foreign to me. I like how Tan shows us how the Chinese way of thinking informs their culture and vice versa, because that's certainly one of the aspects that most people from western cultures have a hard time comprehending and getting their head around. In many more ways, though, it irked me; the beginning was much too slow and ponderous, and large sections of Winnie's story could have been filleted out without making any substantial difference to the storyline. I never particularly found myself caring for the characters, either. Winnie/Wei-lei was certainly a strong and independent female character, of the kind I normally feel very strongly towards. However, I found myself almost skimming over one of the climactic scenes of the novel involving Wen Fu's final attack on her, and really not caring one way or the other what happened to her. That's not what the emotional outcome for the reader should be after investing the time to read nearly four hundred pages. Tan's prose is still clear and elegant and a pleasure to read; I can't see myself picking up another one of her books, though.

It was an eye opener for me at first I didn't want to read it. My book club had picked it and I enjoyed it. I just saw the movie and thought they did a good job as well but, of course, the book is always better.

Had previously read "The Semi-attached Couple" -- have gone back to book to read "Semi-detached House" Many people have recommended Emily Eden "someone to read if you like Jane Austen", she just isn't Austen's equal. The characters are not memorable for me. There is a lack of intimacy with Eden's characters -- nothing that distiguishes one sister from another (in The Semi-Detached House) -- you don't know the characters. (The complete inverse of what one experiences when reading Austen of the Brontes.) Not sorry I have read Eden, just not someone i will re-read.

It is embarassing to admit, but I had never even thought about what a 'Buffalo Soldier' was (as many times as I have listened to the Bob Marley song, never once did it cross my mind!). I enjoyed this book, although it was not as good as Midwives. I also had a hard time getting to know the characters, and understanding how a woman who runs an animal shelter could not have any pets! It seemed odd, and I couldn't really get over it throughout the book.

This was the first book I read by Sedaris; I seriously could not read it on the bus anymore because people kept staring at me - I was laughing out loud!! He's never done anything bad, but i doubt Sedaris has ever done anything better than this!!
