These were some disturbing cakes! Some so horrifying this massive lover of all things cake was put off by some of them. Most creepy was the birthday cake for a 2 year old that was decorated with what was supposed to be ballooons that looked alot more like globby man gentials formed from buttercream icing. That poor child is going to have issues the rest of her life. It has inspired me to make a cake as ugly as I possibly can and see if my kids will still eat it!~

It's by Aaron Raz Link and Hilda Raz. And that's what I love about this book. It's written by Aaron (who used to be Sarah) and his mom, a professor of women's studies. Right now, it's a really powerful book for me and I can gloss over some of the blather because of the important story. --- After reading: probably one of the best books about gender identity I have read. It is funny and it is a story, not a book of theory. Aaron deftly deals with identity politics, therapy, isolation, racism in the queer movement, women-only spaces, male identity, and masculinity with wonderful tone and humor. Hilda's essays are touching and it's nice to see the voice of someone coming to terms with her daughter becoming her son.

He's kinda wierd, from an odd family. I'm not sure I'd really like him if I met him. However, he has a good writing style, and has certainly taught himself to cope healthily with his Asperger's--without the support of his much loonier parents.

I REALLY wish they had a half star option on this website, as this is a 3.5 book for sure. Gregory explores the fallout after the death of Henry VIII with the main character of Hannah (Verde) Green, a Spanish-born Jew, who has the gift of Sight and becomes the Holy Fool at the court of Edward Tudor. During his illness she is sent by her patron, Sir Robert Dudley, to be a companion to Mary Tudor while subtly spying on her for Dudley and others loyal to Elizabeth. She accompanies Mary in her flight, brief war for the throne, and ascension to power. Later Mary uses Hannah as a companion for Elizabeth, while Hannah remains somewhat ignorant of her role as a spy. Tucked into this plot is a backdrop of Hannah's off and on romance with her distant Jewish cousin to whom she is betrothed, as well as the role of her father's printery business and need to disguise their identity as Jews following the Inquisition, as well as the French invasion of Calais, and so on... I'm not sure of the accuracy of all the historical details, but it was enjoyable read, and I certainly know more about that time and its people than before I started.

I think that Seitz is a very talented writer, and I enjoyed reading her work. However, the story told in this book didn't reach me in quite the way I was hoping. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions by the end. I think that this would be a good book for a discussion group, though, since much of this book raises questions about aging, love, the choices we make, how the sins of fathers are revisited on sons, and how vicious cycles can be broken within families. This copy was provided to me by Goodreads' First Read program, and I was not required to give a positive review.
