I was disappointed by this book. It seemed very promising, the characters were intriguing, the premise was intriguing (in the 30s, a young girl who has contravened her family and societal mores is put into an insane asylum and kept there for 60 years until the asylum closes and the grandaughter discovers her existence for the first time) but the execution was too sketchy. The novelist had an interesting idea but didn't develop it. There just wasn't enough meat on the bones. Particularly towards the end I got the feeling that the author was rushing through to complete the novella and had lost interest.

Do you feel like many undeserving novels get great reviews? You buy something, read it and feel more cynical after rather than uplifted? If so, A Novel Bookstore is your literary fairytale, philosophical treatise and detailed business plan folded into the guise of a mystery. Despite some POV weirdness and the editor or translator (or both) doing much of their work after three-martini lunches, I recommend this book to anyone who loves the classics and mourns the loss of bricks and mortar bookstores that hand-sell quality instead of pushing new titles with big marketing budgets.

I love Bill Bryson. This book is a little schizophrenic and does not seem as tightly woven together as some of his other work, but his prose is still fanstastic. I left the book a wiser person. I wouldn't recommend this as a first Bryson read though.
