My favorite part of this book is the "Two-Penny Hangover." There are passages very similar to Crane's "Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets", obviously because of the subject matter but also because of the stylistic vividness of actually having lived in such a state. Also, the bits of dish washing for a living, and accounts of restaurant work, in particular, are remarkable. I would rather read about Orwell's Paris over Hemingway's any day. Not to knock Papa, though.

I liked this but I loved Interpreter of the Maladies.

Several plot points in this book are very different than I remember them (30+ years ago...). I'm so glad I had the opportunity to reread the Betsy-Tacy books, and am sad to come to the end of the series. Now to collect them so that I can return to Deep Valley every few years.

I've had this on my to-read shelf (actually shelves) for a few months.....maybe the subject matter (WWII and Holocaust) don't tempt me lately.

"Throughout Disgrace, Coetzee slyly plays with irony, as words and attitudes are revealed to be superficial at best, perverted at worst ... We are left wondering if it can possibly be enough to own up to one's life and expect redemption." from: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article...

I listened to the audiobook, actually, but it's not findable on here. I loved this! I picked it up at the library because it seemed weird and it was weird. I find myself thinking in the way Louis speaks (perhaps I'm impressionable?), and I can't wait until the movie comes out in 2008.

I did like this book. I admit the idea of playing dress up and living in a pretend world sounded fun at first, I loved to play dress up when I was little; but the idea of the actors being there and everyone having to play a set role would weird me out. I also felt vaguely embarassed for the women since you know the actors there had to think they were a bit crazy!

Anyone that has ever read Ed Abbey knows that Hayduke is Abbey's alter-ego. Abbey let it all hang out in his last book; anyone that wants to understand the Southern Utah environmental movement should read Abbey's Monkey Wrench Gang, and then his parting shot.

Together with Strange Angel, this is one of the two necessary biographies of Jack Parsons. It concentrates on his occult activities, and while a pseudonymous work, appears to have been written by an OTO insider. This damages the book's perspective on key issue, particularly the role of the women in Jack's life. It's still very interesting and illuminating.

I had never heard of SHOMI books before reading this book, so I did not go into the book with any special expectations. The description was just interesting to me. Readers going into this book should realize that it is primarily a light romance story between superheroes in a world where superheroes and villains are quite common. This book reads kind of like a Star Trek TNG episode plays in that there is some action here and there, but the real focus is on the relationships and situations between the characters. In the case of this book, the dialogue and relationship building is almost exclusively between the two main characters. Considering that I love TNG and its format, this book was not hard to like at all. I found the characters to be quite interesting, and the Reincarnist gave the story a unique edge. The romance story was a cute one than managed to keep my interest until the end. There was just enough action in the right places for me. Yes, the constant references to cleavage got annoying during the first half of the book, and, yes, I did figure out a couple of parts of the story on my own before the end of the book. Nevertheless, it was still a very enjoyable read. I snagged this read for free in the kindle store. I will probably pay to read Tekgrrl because I enjoyed this so much.
