I liked the movie okay, but this book was just unfinishable. Boring, violence, boring, violence, and so on. Ugh forget it I'm done.

This is how our system works. “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Superiority of an individual is inevitable. Injustice doesn't exist unless injustice is within a the home of a higher figure. Injustice among the people is absurd because there are rules set by the mighty leaders that prevents injustice. This is a book of how greed originates. I will never understand how politics work. Orwell is an amazing storyteller. Even though it was off the point, he made sure that every character has a distinctive feature that makes the story unique. I loved the naive Mollie (her actions were understandable.) and what happened to Snowball seemed somehow very relevant to what we see in the news nowadays. The best parts in the book was how informations were being altered to serve the higher figures, and this is unarguably an everyday job for some people. What a strange world we live in.

The Blindness of the Heart is a dark novel that begins with a woman abandoning her young son then backtracks to show how life has rendered her unable to care for her son, even as she treats patients, as nurse. Franck sets the book from World War 1 through the end of World War 2, establishing parallels between societal breakdowns and personal problems. The book is filled with pain and abandonment of all sorts and says a lot about the human condition; I'm glad I read the book in small installments. (There's more about The Blindness of the Heart on my blog, here.) Thank you to Amy of The Black Sheep Dances for giving me the review copy she received from Grove Press!

Not Quite a Husband tells the story of Dr. ryony Asquith and her former husband, Quentin Leonidas Marsden. Their romance redevelops as Leo escorts Bryony home from India to be with her dying father. Along the way, they encounter illness, war...and love. Much of what I loved about this book came from Ms. Thomas' choice of a late-Victorian (1897) setting. This allows for freedoms that are difficult to get in historical novels. Bryony is a surgeon and Leo is a mathematics professor, despite both being from well-to-do families. Bryony is able to travel on her own to the Continent, the United States, and India. Perhaps most importantly, they are able to obtain an annulment after 3 years of marriage without ruining either one socially. The uniqueness of Ms. Thomas' main characters is not solely due to her choice of time period, however. She also makes their relationship with one another special in other ways -- Bryony proposes to Leo, and she is significantly (~5 years) older than he is. Yet, the most unique thing about this book is the reason for their annulment and failed marriage. It's not that (view spoiler) is unique in and of itself, but I love that it wasn't just another Big Misunderstanding that could be resolved through a simple conversation. In spite of the fact that the reason for their annulment is exposed at roughly the halfway point of the book, Bryony and Leo (and the reader, for that matter) are genuinely uncertain about their ability to live happily together until nearly the end. Not all was wonderful about this book, however. I had real difficulty adjusting to the exotic setting, and often found myself so caught up in Indian geography and politics that I had lost track of the story entirely. In fact, this book sat on my Kindle for several months before I decided to power through the slow start and get to what turned out to be a fantastic story. I would recommend this book to all fans of historical romance, particularly those who hate seeing limpid heroines swoon into their heroes' arms at every hint of danger. Though it gets off to a slow start, the story it tells is worth the wait. Rating: 4.5/5 This book contains occasional, brief sex scenes.

Everyone loves a good laugh and that's just what Helen Fielding delivers with this romp in the spirit of Tom Jones, with a feminist perspective . . . maybe! Bridget's obsession with her calories, her boss, her clothes and heaven knows what went unchronicled make this one of the funnier British imports of the day. My download had a smashing narrator & that improved the romp immeasurablly!
