I had high hopes for this group when I suggested it for reading group, but it was dreadful. Very badly theorized, we all agreed. The author's efforts to identify and explain resistant practices of gender and sexuality seemed a stretch, and on the whole she was trying way too hard. The book also makes some very strange digressions when it comes to laying out a history of dominant discourses.

I havent finished this entire ordeal yet; however, I've found it so far - while possessing a wonderful anesthetic - a bit bizarre in content. I dig the whole "three books-in-one" thing...I guess sometimes, Mcsweeneys is a little too strange, even for me. I tried reading the book of Oulipo works, and while entertaining, the effect wore off after twenty or so pages. The poetry ordeal, I dig. Haven't picked up the Unwritten Fitzgerald piece yet. I'll give it this: it looks really cool on your shelf. I'll update this later.

For any sports fan, this is one of the "have to reads", or at least that's what I've always been told. Finally got around to reading it and I definitely agree. It's a story surrounding the Oakland A's success around the turn of the century (isn't that a fun term to use for 9 years ago) when with one of the lowest payrolls in baseball they were winning more games than just about anyone. It's also very much a story about several people in the book, notably Billy Beane, the A's GM. In some ways, it was a typical sports non-fiction book with some inside story's, a view of how a team operates and quite a bit of humor. However, what really sets it apart was the detail author Michael Lewis gave in showing how Beane and the A's actually "thought" when it came to developing their players. By using both detailed statistics and generally worded descriptions, it was easy to understand what they were doing, and by the end you think "of course, any idiot knows that" although then you remember this was all revolutionary at the time in sports, and especially in the "old-school" sport of baseball. Although some of the allure has been lost as the A's weren't able to keep up their remarkable success, they are still known as one of the top notch organizations when it comes to turning a low payroll into a winner. Being a Rays fan (2nd to your World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, which I just love typing), it was interesting to compare and contrast there recent rise to prominence in a similar payroll situation. If you could care less about sports and baseball, not one of those books that transcends the subject in anyway (you'll be bored very quickly). However, if you enjoy the game in anyway, this is definitely a must-read.
