I've been reading a lot of independent romance novels lately. I have to say I was impressed with Nicky Charles. I've read the first books two in this series. I like them both but I liked this one better. Plan to read the third one soon. I loved the alpha male in this story.

Dear Saul, I'm afraid it's over. I can no longer have you on my favorite authors list. (No, no let go of F. Scott's sleeve. You're only making this harder than it needs to be.) I want to tell you how much I loved Henderson the Rain King. One of my favorites. It was so full of wit and energy. Then I had to go and read this piece of crap, Herzog. Whereas Henderson was an adventure, this was just a big long bitch session. (Hey, give Borges back his cane.) Yes, fine maybe it's me. In fact I'm sure it is. Just like songs with melodies I can easily whistle, I need books with plots where things happen. I'm just not smart enough to be satisfied with the philosophy laden interior monologues that comprise most of this book (416 pages, for chrissakes!) I mean I can't make heads or tails of this passage: Whereas a man like me has shown the arbitrary withdrawal of proud subjectivity from the collective and historical progress of mankind. And that is true of lower-class boys and girls who adopt the aesthetic mode, the mode of rich sensibility. Seeking to sustain their own version of existen... And it just goes on like that. Sorry I couldn't bring myself to type the rest of that paragraph. So it's me. I'm obviously not wise enough for this book. But still you gotta go. (And don't steal Nabokov's pen on the way out. Could someone send Dostoyevsky in here, please?)

This is a long novel, promising to be the first of ten. Honestly, this book was difficult for me to finish. I picked it up several times and had to put it down. After I finished the book, I did a bit more research and learned it was inspired by the on line sex game, Sociolotron, http://www.sociolotron.com. This is just not my type of book. I don't enjoy role playing games so this probably added to my confusion and lack of engagement. The constant thoughts going through my head while reading this book was, "Where do these people come from that they can't remember? And what the HELL is going on?". I believe a lot of this had to do with the fact that I had no baseline understanding of this world and I frankly, didn't care for the characters enough to have a vested interest to learn about them. I probably would rate this a 2.5 star, but I'm not and here is why. Ms. Lewis does create an intriguing world. Her concept is sound, just a tad slow in revealing unless someone knows the back history of Sociolotron. While most new authors struggle with telling more than showing, Ms. Lewis does not. Some of the time, I had to re-read passages to accurately visualize the scene. I give her props for strong imagery. Ms. Lewis also does a good job of setting up two warring factions with a strong dose of malicious intent between both sides. I do like this set up; I just wish it didn't take so long to get to this point. Ms. Lewis showcases a bit more of the heavier parts of BDSM which I enjoyed. TPE, slavery, piercings and branding were well done. The branding ceremony was interesting and explained more of the story line. The altars were just plain weird. For me, I kept thinking of a Sybian designed by a mad scientist with Japan. Where else would tentacle sex come from, but Japan? Since I can't help but be riveted to Japanese taboo sexual practices, this peaked my interest. If I could eliminate one thing from the book, it would be the consistent use of the word, MINE. It was cute the first couple of times. I'm not sure the intent or the meaning behind this, just that after a while, every time I saw the world in all caps, I thought of the seagulls from movie, "Finding Nemo". The juxtaposition of sex slaves writhing in an orgy with diving bombing brainless seagulls in my mind just caused greater confusion.

This book was a GoodReads Giveaway. While not my usual genre, this book was well written and enjoyable. I personally don't like a novel to move from one time period to another, so this book took me longer to get into.

Masur depicts 1831 as a year enveloped in uncertainty, radicalism, and a foreboding sense of change. The book illustrates the depth and variety of issues that were highly contended in the era of Jackson, such as slavery and nullification. Because the Civil War would not come for another thirty or so years, it is interesting, and even a bit shocking, that so many Americans were certain that an armed conflict between the North and South was unavoidable. The entire book is well researched. Multiple viewpoints and pieces of evidence are used to detail each struggle, and Masur has a real penchant for memorable quotations. By focusing on the events of single year, Masur has room to highlight lesser-known events of this timeframe, such as those involving labor activists and certain religious groups. Masur's book about a single year in America expands upon topics just long enough to make them understandable, and just briefly enough to pique the reader's interest to further investigate some of the cited artists, activists, and statesmen of 1831.

Very fun book.

One of my all-time favorites (one of my top 10 books to take if I had to go live on a deserted island, especially one without Internet) - touching and hilarious essays that every booklover/editor will appreciate. This book didn't change my life so much as strongly affirm my worldview vis-a-vis books and reading (which, let's admit it, is kind of a nice thing). Anne Fadiman is such a Kindred Spirit - almost every essay here had me nodding and/or shouting, "Exactly!!" In the decade or so since I first encountered this book, I've continually referenced these essays while going about my life (and I still chuckle whenever I think, "Sir, you must NEVER do that to a book!"). Like, when I was studying abroad in Argentina in 2001, I realized I was in the "carnal love" (as opposed to "courtly love") camp, at least for travel books, when I had no problem tearing out (insert gasps here on behalf of courtly lovers of books) the relevant pages of my Rough Guide to Argentina before going on a trip (but, I must confess, I've bravely creased spines of some of my other books and pretended not to care, but still cringed a bit inside). And as my Goodreads profile indicates, that my hubby is not much of a fellow reader or collector of books means both more space for my books in our house and no "marrying libraries" dilemma (though, the way Fadiman describes it, what a fun dilemma to have - when weeding out duplicates, would you, say, keep the signed, pristine first edition or the dog-eared paperback with your husband's margin notes from adolescence?). If you enjoy steeping yourself in books and words, have ever self-righteously pointed out a typo in a Chinese take-out menu, have been bothered by the fact that a sign in a bathroom stall reads something like: Please don't put toilet paper in the toilet (yes, HORRORS, the line breaks in the middle of a prepositional phrase!! true story from one of my best friends, who also loves this book...) ... and have not yet experienced this wonderful bundle of essays, you should read this IMMEDIATELY.

I like how I quoted heavily from this in my women's studies papers even though it's basically a memoir dogging on other black woman. FAIL.

What a fun book. I absolutely loved it. The story is full of mystery, monsters, romance, humor, and even a little action. The story takes place in London during the rule of Queen Victoria. With a little bit of spice added to the era, London is aware of all things supernatural. Werewolves, vampires, and ghosts oh my! To keep the supernatural in line there are agencies set up to watch the city. One more thing, Alexia Tarabotti is a preternatural, the supernatural cannot touch her. On the night of a party that Alexia is attending she is attacked by an aware vampire who isn’t aware his strength and his teeth will not work on her. Of course this is not the crime, the crime is that he attacked at all. Now Alexia will join forces with a hot werewolf in the investigation. Alexia, Lord Maccon, and many more unique characters fill this book. Alexia is an awesome heroine. She is smart, eccentric, and fearless. I have not enjoyed a heroine this much in a very long time. Lord Maccon is hot, sarcastic, and lovable. The banter between these too is possibly one of the most entertaining banters I have ever read. We add this to a flamboyant vampire, a clueless best friend, and a furry second in command and you get an award winning cast that will keep you laughing out loud from start to finish. I have a very strong feeling this will be one of my favorite series.

Harika kitap. Shay'in Brandy olmasıyla ilgili bölümü çok beğendim. İyi gelişti. Bunun tersi, Brandy'nın Shay olması o kadar da gelişmiş değildi, ama yine de ilginçti.
