Daisy, a woman everyone takes to be a spoiled brat, marries a man her father picks out for her. It's either six months of marriage or jail and she picks the man. The man in question is Alex Markov, a man raised as a circus performer, though he's moved on. He takes on a wife to repay the debt he feels he owes to the woman's father. He intends to give her a crash course in reality by taking her with him as a worker in the circus with which he occassionally performs. Daisy has a few lessons in store for Alex, however. She's not as soft as everyone thinks she is. She won't give up, even when Alex does his best to break her. This is, after all, a love story and a hardened man doesn't stand a chance against a woman like Daisy. Not my favorite of Phillips' writings, but an enjoyable read. If you like Jennifer Crusie or some of Janet Evanovich's non-Plum stuff, you might like this. It doesn't have the laugh-out-loud humor of either of these authors, but the female character making it through is a strong theme.

Great for kids! Like the first one, though, not nearly as good as later books in the series.

While not the best read for business and not particularly well written, The Five Dysfunctions does offer solid ideas on working with teams and managing bad apples.

Comment: This is the 1962 Translation of John Macquarrie and Edward Robinson, not the later translation of Joan Stambaugh. Note that the Table of Contents below differs considerably from that of the Stambaugh translation. I need to pick up Stambaugh's translation and compare both texts.

Who knew economics could be so riveting and world-changing? Evryone should read this book. It offers the key to eliminating world poverty, and has already been successfully implemented in many countries.

This whole series of books is so amazing and creative, totally immerses you in another universe. The movie pales in comparison. Update. I recently read this book with my 5-year-old daughter, first time I've read it since I was a kid. The story is so much fun and really immerses the reader into this other universe. The writing, however, is really not all that great. Very choppy, very old-fashioned. I wanted to edit it to make it better. I'm revising my rating to 4 stars, and if it were any other book, I'd probably bump it down to 3. But it's the Wizard of Oz, for crying out loud...it has to warrant at least 4 stars!

This was the last book of the series. I liked this one better, because there wasn't one mention of her cramps, like in all the other books. It was dark like the others, but also had its lighter moments or romantic moments. Girls who like fantasy will like this series.

this is my very favorite work of modern fiction. so far, i have not found anything i have enjoyed better. it is fantastical, noir, romantic, and exciting. i like to look across the san francisco bay to the west and see the cloudbank roll in over the peninsula hills and think about the world of the people who live there. if you liked '100 years of solitude', you will probably like this book too.
I read this booking looking for some practical advice on breaking through burnout in my development career. This book was OK, but focused FAR too much on very successful people such as CEO's, actors and sports stars. I had a very hard time finding any application to my own professional life.
