Tom Robbins is a master of language. This book would have been a pleasure to read if only for the feel of the words in my mouth and my amusement and admiration of what Robbins' ingenuity with prose. Lucky for me, however, he used this skill with language to weave a hilarious, outlandish, largely charming story centered on petite stockbroker Gwen Mati. Her eccentric friends, pathetic boyfriend, and obnoxious coworkers flesh out the story. Robbins style is self-aware, almost to the point of being another character itself, but stops short of overwhelming the story.

Someone bought this in Thailand and passed it on to Pam who passed it on the staff book shelf in the office where it was picked up by Joann and then handed off to me. Interesting time period (1400's) and reminds me of truly what peaceful times we are living in -- in many places in the world (I know not all!). Easy to read at night and on the subway. I hope to read The Red Queen.

This is a brilliant novel. A sort of Canadian Great Gatsby, Sparrow Nights follows tormented and alcoholic university professor Darius Halloway as he moves through the emotional stages of a hard breakup. Perpetually infatuated by young women that invariably leave, Professor Halloway moves through life as an undernourished ghost, so socially deprived that a glimpse of a coworker at home through a crack in a curtained window brings him a sense of fullness for the night. I found myself underlining phrases in the book, and not just in the first chapter. Irony abounds, as (view spoiler). Halloway even meets his own Daisy Buchanan. Well edited and well written, Sparrow Nights should be included in the ranks of In the Skin of a Lion and A Handmaid's Tale.

Just finished the last episode of the Classic Tales Podcast where BJ Harrison read out The Mask of Zorro. Appropriately thrilling, it was also mildly predictable and I found the ending to be a bit deus ex-machina-ish. Still worth going through, though.

Prior to reading this book, I was VERY excited. The premise was interesting and it seemed like something that McCafferty could write well as she's written from a teen/young adult's perspective before. While I don't dislike this book, I certainly don't like it very much. There was so much more that could have been done and I was very disappointed with the ending. There was very little resolution. I was also disappointed with the scientific research that McCafferty could easily have done. She provided no insight into the "virus" that causes infertility at the age of 18. I understand that she had to illustrate why teenage girls were the only ones who could become pregnant, but she should have let the reader know how it happened. Even just a quick prologue chapter would have sufficed. I was also disappointed with the chosen audience. It was written like it was for a 10-year old girl, but the content is too mature for any female that young to be reading it. She made up slang words that just seemed stupid instead of inventive (Oh sorry, was that comment too "neggy"?). I felt like an idiot reading it and didn't like that she created her own internet lingo (like the "michat"). I loved her inventiveness when it came to having the "minet" hooked into contact lenses that everyone wears all the time so that you can constantly be aware of others around you and what everyone is doing, but it seemed like it was facebook on steroids - just not enough imagination. I am saddened to give this book 2 out of 5 stars and the only reason it's even getting two is because the writing improved a bit near the ending. I was so looking forward to this book and now I'm disappointed. Long story short: I want my $17.99 back.

An old-fashioned detective novel that was surprisingly character developed and driven given the time period and genre for which it was written. Interesting note, if you ever see "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" - a movie with Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer - the chapter titles are taken from book titles written by Raymond Chandler.

I never thought I could be so moved by a book. The tale of a girl going through the ups and downs of drug use, gives you a whole new perspective on the world that so many people are mixed up in.

Lioness Song'un hissi ile aynı his.

Sadece bilmiyorum.
