The Walden Books in my mall is closing this weekend, and everything is currently 40% off. This is bad, very bad. I don't normally buy books, only the ones I really love. And so, I finished purchasing this series. Probably one of my all time favorites. Can't say enough good things about this book and this series. Could (and have) read this over...and over...and over.

The subject matter was very interesting. I most enjoyed reading about the actual research studies that he performed. However, I found him to be a very annoying author - quite full of himself and never afraid to brag about his accomplishments. I suppose he was trying to make himself appear credible, but it got to be too much for me. I definitely learned a lot and am planning to make some changes to what we eat, and I definitely plan to read more on this topic. The book has provided good discussion points and caused me to think. That being said, I'm not sold on the totally vegetarian, totally dairy-free diet. I found the rat studies (aflatoxin & caesin causing liver cancer) to be most convincing. After the first several chapters, it seemed to change from citing research into more circumstantial evidence and his opinion. Many times he would also say, "one study showed..." without acknowledging whether there were 50 other studies that were inconclusive or that may have said the opposite. As far as his dairy argument, I found it to be most convincing for prostate cancer and Type 1 diabetes (in children weaned too early to cow's milk). In summary, it was an interesting read. I would have rather read something on the same topic but with a more unbiased author. A few of his arguments seemed to be a good stretch.

It has some good rythmn, and while the blurb on the cover says it is about problems, the actual book is not very preachy!

This book presents the reader with a George Washington they may not be familiar with. It humanizes the general and makes us realize that while he was loaded with charisma and leadership qualities, his prowess as a military strategist left much to be desired. This lack of military expertise along with the bedraggled state of the American Army should have made us sitting ducks for the larger, more professional and much better supplied and equipped British Army and their Hessian mercenaries. However, as we all know, the American won out. This book tells you how.

I am re-reading this now (May 2009). It is quite simply my most favorite book, and it gets better with age.

By this time Evanovich has really fallen into a formula and after reading seven of these books they all start to mesh after awhile. I keep reading them because generally they are funny and light. A great distraction and quick read. However, although this one had its moments I didn’t find this one as funny as the others. I don’t know if the formula is getting stale for me or I was just hoping for something a little different, like possibly some progress in Stephanie’s relationship with Morelli. Either way this one didn’t really do it for me.

As usual it’s a fun romp through the streets of Trenton with Stephanie Plum and crew. As I’ve said in other reviews of this series these are fun mind candy reads. They are formulaic, but for me they still work because I think the characters are hilarious.

Every time someone asked me what I was reading, I held up this massive tome and said, "It's about the search for the Northwest Passage. And a MONSTER!" The looks I got in return were priceless. This book is not a horror novel. Is it scary? Yes. But the things that are scary about it are the real things - starving to death, dying of scurvy, cannibalism. The monster stalking them on the ice? Big and gross, malevolent and hulking, but I read great amounts of this book at night and was never once scared of it. The things that made me tense were the isolation, the hopelessness of the sailors' situation. If the Terror was going to kill them, it was going to kill them. Aside from that, which is much more an issue I have with the marketing of the book than the book itself, I thought this was excellent. I've read a bit - not as much as I would like - about the Franklin expedition, and really enjoyed the small details. My favorite was probably Blankey's promise to himself that he was finally going to read The Vicar of Wakefield. This is the one book (aside from Bibles) that later search parties discovered when they looked for the lost explorers. I can't swear to it, but I'd bet that the bulk of the small details Simmons dropped in about what people carried with them, etc. comes from similar sources (there were, after all, a lot of search parties over the years after the Franklin expedition, both in the immediate years following and much later, with an archaeological bent). Anyway. Did this book need to be 800 pages long? Probably not. If someone had cut out about half of the it-was-cold-and-scurvy-is-gross discussion, it would be significantly shorter. But I didn't mind the length, and it-was-cold-and-scurvy-is-gross is kind of the point of the book, isn't it? And a MONSTER!
