not one of his best. it's still full of the wild imagery that is so classically Tom Robbins, but the story drags a little.

This book got such good reviews I figured I'd read it. Though I may be getting fairly saturated with books about supernatural women negotiating with werewolf packs. Very popular topic these days. And, in fact, it was pretty good. :) Mercy Thompson is a mechanic in a world where the lesser fey have been outed to the humans, and it's just a matter of time before the other supernatural critters go public. She's also a skinwalker, which she believes is just someone who can shift form into a coyote, but which she starts to find out is a lot more. She was raised by werewolves, and her mentor and former boss is fey, so she's pretty solidly in the supernatural community. When a teenage boy shows up at her doorstep, obviously a newly-made werewolf and just as obviously on the run, she gets sucked into a vicious plot that involves all of werewolves, vampires, and fey that she knows. Sorting it all out brings her in contact with her old lover, and forges new relationships, and hints to her that she has more power than she realizes. On a side note, I had read a short story about one of the other characters in the book in an anthology, and didn't connect them until about halfway through the book. It was a welcome surprise.

I'm not sure what's scarier, Frankenstein's monster or having to slog through this book.

The Aperture series usually does a good job of letting the artist work do the talking. In August Sanders case what you get is an amazing series of "matter of fact" portraits and poignant commentary on gender and social class differences

I really like this edition (ISBN 0-460-11307-0), for two reasons: First, it contains the original language and spelling, though harmonised (that is, words are spelled in an archaic manner, but each word will be spelled in one archaic manner throughout). Second, it is laid out in a manner that I find very pleasant and convenient: Single word explanations (translations, if you will) are given in marginal notes, where necessary; longer explanations (a sentence or two of context) are given in footnotes—not chapter endnotes, mind you, but proper footnotes. This means that very brief explanations are found at the ends of lines in the marginal, where your eye naturally travels anyway, and the longer ones are still accessible without the incessant flipping back and forth between text and endnotes that some books necessitate.

Favorite Quotes She could walk through a lightning storm without being touched; grab a bolt of lightning in the palm of her hand; use the heat of lightning to start the kindling going under her medicine pot. She turned the moon into salve, the stars into swaddling cloth, and healed the wounds of every creature walking up on two or down on four.

I enjoyed this book, even though I am quite a bit older than it's target audience. I would have LOVED it when I was twelve. Once the story got going and Percy was at Camp Half Blood, it was really engaging, and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next, even though I figured out who the perpetrator was pretty early on.

Favorite Quotes: ...I've just noticed a new ice-cream flavor called Chipitty-Dough-Dah. Then I'm imagining the meeting where a bunch of men in suits and ties sat around and tried to come up with that, all the names they might have discarded along the way, and I want to know if they had fun saying Chipitty-Dough-Dah over and over, or was it just another day at the office? Does everyone think that way? I really want to know. And here is the thing...I don't think it matters if it's normal in general, as long as one person thinks it is, or at least thinks it's OK. If you could have that person in your life all the time, and you could show her every little oddball nugget your brain digs up, and she thought it was OK, if she thought you were smart or funny, then it would be OK. Normal or not wouldn't even matter. I want you to know, Eliot...I believe in God just as much as he does. I mean, not that it's a contest, but we have very different ideas. I don't think you seek out God directly, or else He would just come down and visit us once in a while. I think He wants us to seek him out through other people, through being in love with the world. He's in the ocean, He's in a bagful of snacks and the way you end up laughing about them. He's in the laughing. It's not the someone-better-say-something silence. It's the soft green kind. The kind that makes you think of new grass and sprinklers and lemonade...We ride in silence again, but now it's the other kind. The black kind. The awkward, maybe-this-car-ride-wasn't-such-a-good-idea kind. The kind you sit through at the dinner table because your parents are trying to make a good showing by having a family dinner...It's quiet for a while again, but this time it's one of those yellowy orange silences that makes you think of birthday cake and brightly colored balloons.

Not a literary classic, but good in it's creation and suspense.
