I had real trouble getting through this book at first (in all it took me three years plus). It was slow to start and densely loaded with details throughout. However, I flew through the last two hundred pages in about a week, mostly due to the excitement of Lewis and Clark's return to St. Louis, and the strange, tragic chain of events that unfold following their homecoming. Haunting, really. I'd say, a must for history buffs and the generally curious.

Lynda Barry is amazing at using these tiny moments to really get at huge emotions and universal experiences. Plus, her work is so clearly painstaking (the inking! the collage!) and she is so so likable -- you are always rooting for her as she breaks and warms yr heart. I was just going to skim through this to determine the age appropriateness, but I ended up reading through the whole thing again in about a day. First read in January 2006.

I tried reading this. I really tried. But I just have a hard time reading ANYONE'S book who refers to people as "Orientals"... sheesh, PEOPLE ARE ASIAN. FURNITURE IS ORIENTAL. And the whole conspiracy is just a little too much -- Rhodes scholarships are the preferred method of induction? seriously? I will admit, I did learn some from this book -- how to think more critically about certain political subjects and how to liken today's events more toward scripture. And had some very interesting conversations with my husband who was horrified I had even check it out.

Very well done, but hard to read, very choppy! (Done on purpose...) It skips around a lot. Still a good read. It's like the bouncy, motion-filled parts of Saving Private Ryan or something similar (timeline? haha!), but in literary form. This is based on Vietnam. Word has it that Herr wrote the screenplays for Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now.
