Chosen as pretty much a joke for my geeky Dinner and a Book Club, QVDH wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected it to be. Yes, it's silly and a complete knockoff in the recent historical-supernatural knockoff. But it's pretty well-written and often laugh-out-loud funny. All in all, a win.

Despite the many (and there were many) flaws in this book, I really could not stop reading this one. Particularly because I've grown to love the Harrington Family and I wanted to find out what happens to Zach. I could have done with out the religious angle - only because it seemed layered onto the characters' motivations instead of being an organic part of the book. I also could have done with out the bratty brother. My goodness, there were at least a dozen times I wanted to give his sorry ass a time out and wondered why Mandy didn't just tell him to grow up. He was not a likable character in the least and we spend a great deal of time with him. My feeling is that in order to give Mandy a reason for being she was given about 200 too many problems and that was a problem for me. However, I continued to read it because the characters continued to interest me. I wanted to find out how Zach and Mandy finally find their way to each other. Will I pick up the next book in the series? Most likely.

the world in a grain of sand. would recommend to interested parties Adam Gopnik and David Brock's "The Republican Noise Machine" as like reading. that said--commas, so many commas, semicolons, parenthetical clauses, addendums, this, that & the other, & the other, & the other--sometimes I want to call her up (or perhaps draft a longhand letter?) and tell her she shouldn't feel guilty about using a period and starting a new sentence every once and a while.

i was reading Marie Claire, and they recommended this book. i am happy that I read it. The storyline was very intriquing, lesbian love in an orthodox community(and all THE DRAMA). I liked how each chapter began with quote from the torah.

there's a point in life when you're finally faced with the mortality of your parents...reading this book coincided with that exact moment of realization... heartbreaking. illuminating. this book is everything.

Finally read the series to see what the fuss was about. And I liked it. First book wasn't too overloaded with the usual angst associated with teen/romance novels. Neatly done.

A really awesome story of a retired proofreader who critiques the changing apartheid society in Johannesburg, South Africa in the 1970s using his editing vocabulary, extensive knowledge of etymology, and other proofreading skills. It is challenging, a dictionary is often needed, but also a very different kind of apartheid book because events are only learned as they are perceived by the narrator who doesn't pay attention to actual events as much as he does to the errors they are presented with.
