The most graphic rape scenes I've ever read. It disturbs my dreams to this day.

The concept was original. Vaughan has a good crack at the ideas he explores, which is tricky really because the comparisons between freedom, captivity, liberation, security can easily be labelled as trite if not handled carefully. I think he does pretty well. I did find the rape scene very jarring, maybe that was the intention, but to me it took one step too many toward a very disturbingly all too human scene played out by lions. I'm no great art critic. I've got more of a draughtsman's eye for pretty pictures. So when I hear people complaining about the Disney/Lion King artwork all I can really muster in defence of the artwork is 'Hey, they look like lions to me.' Great action, entertaining, thought provoking and looks good. I don't think Vaughan is quite up to his previous standards but I think some slack is warranted considering the subject matter. Love the scene with the bear.

This one and The Angel Experiment were the best two in the series, in my opinion. All the others were just disappointing.

Lee Fiora is a female Holden Caulfield in this coming of age story about prep school and the angst of the wealthy. Very witty and a biting look at social class and privilege.

I really enjoyed this book. The author gives the main character a very strong and unique voice. Prior to this book, the only work of fiction that I'd read about an autistic child was To Kill a Mockingbird (and Boo Radley didn't add much besides mystery to the story). Actually hearing the voice of autism (I understand that Mark Haddon has extensive experience with autistic children) was a good enough reason to read the book for me, but the plot is also quite engaging and fresh. The story is a rehash of the murder mystery genre with a focus on the growth and adventures of the investigator. I don't normally enjoy mysteries, but I felt that this book had enough added outside the genre stereotypes that it transcended the predictability of many mysteries. Though the main character is most interested in solving the crime, I found myself more interested in how he went about approaching it and until the killer was revealed, hardly cared “who done it?!”
As a 6th grade teacher, I am always looking for books that will spur my boys on to reading. This series is a turbo ride for boys. They love the action-packed plot and the fascinating characters, such as giant talking cockroaches, bats that carry people in battle and rats that know martial arts! The book goes further by setting up an entire civilization living under New York City with prophecies guiding their actions. It is full of political intrigue and moral dilemmas. Personally, I love the fact that a strong male character can show such strength in his family relationships. His devotion to his baby sister, his mother, father and everyone else is inspiring and deeply touching. I would encourage young adults to put this on their list as it gives clues into the difficulty of coming-of-age.
