It's not just that I didn't like this book. I hated it. It's not just that Ayn Rand is an idiot, or that her novel(s) espouse a ridiculous counterintuitive worldview. It's that the readers who fall for her smug oversimplified logic often become class-A pricks of the most detestable nature. Her worldview, which she calls selfishness, purports that we all ought to act in what is our own best interest (selfishly) above all else. She also waxes poetic about pure capitalism, unfettered by the reigns of government regulation. Obviously, her selfish worldview is particularly appealing to the College Republican set.

Contains one of the best jokes I know. To paraphrase: Two worn-out dogs with mangy coats run into a third dog on the streets of Moscow. This third dog has a gorgeous, shiny coat, and appears well-fed. The two dogs walk up to the third and ask, "How the hell did you get so much food? We're starving out here!" The third dog goes, "Well, there's this doctor Pavlov who runs this psychology institute. I walk in and he puts me in a warm room and rings a bell. All I have to do then is drool a little, and these well-trained doctors bring me a meal!" Other than that it's pretty boring.

loved it. really entertaining. made me crack a real, physical smile every other page. later i read the puzzleheaded girl by christina stead and the whimsical portrayal of pretty macabre/dreadful-on-the-face-of-it social events echoed. got the same feeling recently reading boris vian. there ought to be a tidy term for this--when bizarre and kind of grotesque events and interactions are told in a totally innocent oddly straightforward tone. hipster ish bard lyricism for the hot nerdy college girls, or something like that...what's that boris vian quote about love for beautiful girls and trying to get their attention is all that really matters, was the only modern archetypal story he was concerned with. anyway.
