One of the most important books of the twentieth century, this book is a landmark for post-colonial studies. Super duper important for any discussion of language as a label for culture. It's dense as butter and not that fun, but thought provoking.

This second book of the series was much more enjoyable than the first. Though I still feel that Emma is a bit too juvenile, this story was funny and interesting. There were many more secondary characters introduced throughout the tale and they were all pleasant and fun to read about. I think I liked this one more because it actually felt like there was a plot going on. Emma and Eadric help Grassina search for the items needed to turn her beloved Haywood back into a human after 20+ years as an otter. Their search introduces them to a number of interesting creatures. I definitely feel better about the series after having read the second book and will continue it.

This was very very well written and very very interesting. I don't however appreciate it the way it was meant to. I guess, not knowing much about the post-colonial context, I can't read it in such a way so a bit of the meaning is lost on me.

this book is extremely dense, but so interesting (for someone who is interested in this sort of stuff). i especially liked chapter 2, "the phantom state," which talks about the underground government, schools, and health care systems that were set up.
I'm so done with Nick Hornby. I liked the movie adaptations of "High Fidelity" and "About a Boy" and I've heard from various people, like my mom, how great Hornby's books are. This is the second I've read, and I'm officially giving up. "A Long Way Down" is disorganized, rambling, and shallow. It is a page-turner, so I read the whole thing, but that doesn't mean it's good. Just mindless. ("How To Be Good" also sucked).

This book is about grace! I'm not big on grace, don't get me wrong, so that's why I didn't really like it. He has an amazing story. I got tired of it a bit.

Truly amazing that this journalist actually lived as much history as he did, meeting everyone from Golda Meir to the Dalai Lama. Really well written and interesting reading, even some of the stories I'd never heard about - the death row inmate interviews at the beginning of the book were pretty compelling.

Having read a number of Paulo Coelho books, I find that my reaction to them depends on where I am in my life, what kind of mood. They can be monotonous if read one after the other. This book, however, spoke to me, for some reason. I enjoyed the little pieces of advice about life...never be ashamed of what life hands you...etc. The kind of advise your mother might give you. I enjoyed it.
