I just finished my FirstReads copy of "The Pope's Assassin" and couldn't wait to write a review. It has been a long time since I've read more than 300 pages in a single day or been surprised by so many plot twists. I was drawn into this thriller from the start and kept finding excuses to read just one more chapter. There were so many twists & turns in the story that it is hard not to reveal too much and spoil this book for others! Any book that promises a shadowy priest/operative has got to be good. The intrigue was multi-layered: the Church's relationship with the Jesuits, the secret documents, agents & double agents, conspiracies & conspirators, questionable alliances, and the mysterious JC. Add in a few great locations and non-stop action, and you've got a real winner. This book kept surprising me right up until the final pages. And made me think I need to check out more books by this author & the translator. Thanks again to Goodreads FirstReads for introducing me to another terrific author and giving me the opportunity to read this excellent book!

This reads like a meditation. A window into real life where it's hard to decipher whose voice is whose. The constellations, cusp between modern and traditional, the iron bed moved up and down the stairs, the dissection of love as if it were some sort of strange insect on the bank of Tinker Creek: some of my favorite things.

i taught this book. maybe it isn't the best book of the last 25 years (as the new york times called it) but it was and is fairly spectacular. the middle passage scene. wow.

I could not put this book down. Buy it..you will not be dissapointed. Isabel Gillies starts by saying she is not a writer, but writes good emails. The story unfolds as if told to a confidant, and there are plenty of twists and turns that keep the story interesting. As a once divoriced mother of 2 small boys, I could relate completely to her fear and heartbreak, but also her steely will to continue on in life cheerfully and hopefully. This is a great read for anyone who is going thru or has gone thru divorice after marriage to a selfish, faithless man. If any woman out there is "the other" woman, here is an outline of the heartbreak you are causing not just the wife, but the children. The description of the college was interesting, but not to me any way important to the real story.

I think Jhumpa needs to expand her horizons a little. Her stories revolve around the same mundane and are so banal. She does not explore any challenging issues and tries to find captivation in the mismatched furniture of immigrants or in their eating habits. Her prose is characterized by inane details of the ordinary, her metaphors are prosaic, and her characters predictable. I know she has a huge fan following, but among South Asian writers (here I mean the ones that write about south asians) she pales in comparison to most of the writers out there. She likes to model herself after Alice Munro-but the comparison at best is amusing. Alice Munro is a bold in her writing, and she has the interest of her reader from the start to the finish. I often skip pages of Lahiri's work in an effort to get to the end.

Sharon Kay Penman is my favorite author when it comes to historical fiction, and she wrote a four book mystery series that combines an exciting fictional mystery with her expertise on English history. Dragon’s Lair is the third book in the Justin de Quincy mystery series. The year is 1193, and as the Queen’s man (the Queen being Eleanor of Aquitaine), de Quincy is on a mission to Wales to find the missing ransom meant to free King Richard from his captors. Those familiar with Penman’s Here be Dragons will be pleased to reacquaint themselves with Llywelyn the Great as he plays a key role in this mystery. The story is exciting, and Penman creates characters that are memorable. While I have enjoyed the first three mysteries, Dragon’s Lair is my favorite. I can’t wait to find out what new adventure Justin de Quincy will embark upon in the next book, Prince of Darkness!

If you like the type of horror/strangeness found in the game Eternal Darkness, you will love H.P. Lovecraft.

It takes off fast. It is brilliantly edited storytelling that takes off like it is going to rip your hands off. You could read over a weekend, but why let the pure enjoyment slip away? This should be offered to all those non-reading teens who insist they love the NBA. This could very well make readers out of them all!!! I enjoyed staying up to 3 a.m. several times to read this one. It was truly enjoyable reading, and the kind of book I hope to find more of. The author really needs to come out with more books. This one really picks up toward the end, too, pushing buttons, sparking memories of NBA great moments, players, seasons, dynasties, and educates on the off-court things that us non-players never see. I will definitely recommend this one to many friends. Author Tom McEachin was smart to recognize the storytelling ability of Rod Hundley, his place in U.S. basketball history, and capture it all in the former player turned announcer's words. Finding any error was difficult, but finally, a few extra spaces and tossed out helping words were missing toward the end -- other than that, it is a major hidden sports literary treasure. I think a number of non-basketball fans would find it enjoyable, too.

I rolled eyes for a while here, but was sucked in eventually. As girl-narrator goes through her issues (weight) and her brother's (date rape) and her parents' (cluelessness), you get it, and her choices. Handled some subtle stuff for girls: how damaging father's complements can be, however well-meaning. "You've really lost weight!" he muses, and she says something like, "you know what dad? I'm going to tell you that in this family we're not going to talk about my body anymore." It's maturity that I haven't managed to muster as a grownup, and therefore is unlikely, but shoot, I'd like adolescent girls to have her in their heads, so that's something.

Issue 8, which kicks off volume 2, comes out in a week or two. What better time to dust off this, the best comic of 2006/7? Plus that's the real cover up there now. I'm a bit anal about that sort of thing.
