I'm going to start by saying this. If you loved Twilight you'll love this book. If you don't like Twilight it's probably not the book for you. I for one really really enjoyed this book. I loved the setting, the writing style and the main character. I read the whole thing in two sittings as found the plotline really engaging and found it really easy to rocket through. The main criticism I can forsee being made about this book is that it is similiar to Twilight. I'd have to agree and same there certainly are parallels. The main character moves across the county and starts a new school. She is drawn to a mysterious and brooding handsome stranger who has a paranormal edge to him. While I think it'll really bother some readers I really didn't mind and thought the story itself had enough going for it that made it sufficiently different from Twilight. I thought the main character in this book was really sweet and lovely and enjoyed getting to know her. The main love interest of the piece is dark and brooding and just a little bit gorgeous. I also enjoyed the host of characters you meet, such as the other students in the school, Renee's Grandfather and several of the teaching staff and can;t wait to find out more about them. I also loved the setting. A gothic and mysterious boarding school with an antiquated curriculum and code of conduct was just a little bit too awesome for me! For me the best bit about this book is the potential it has as a story overall. Loads of ideas have been set up in place ready to be explored in the future. It ends on an excruiating cliffhanger and leaves so many answers which I need answered asap. All in all a welcome addition to the paranormal romance genre.

Now that I have finished I do have to say that I detest almost all of the characters but the story is so unique that it was worth it. The author definitely deserves her well earned praise. I ended up liking only 2 characters, Stephen Black and Arabella, but the plot was certainly fascinating. However, this book will only appeal to anglophiles and those patient enough to stick with a big tome (about 800 pages, which is why I heard the book during my commute). The story of how the fairy gentleman found out the real name of Stephen was one of the most inventive, beautifully haunting and truly horrifying tales that I've read in a while.

Note: I can only speak for the first third of this book, because I stopped reading there. I enjoy discovering interesting facts about other cultures, and a book discussing Myanmar/Burma, a place I know very little about, seemed pretty promising. The Trouser People had facts. Lots of facts. But it didn't offer me anything else: It read like a collection of trivia, loosely organized along the author's journeys through the country. The book was dry. It entirely lacked passion or emotion. Even the jokes (which were plentiful) were dry. I guess that's the British way, which makes sense since the author's an Englishman. And that leads me to the final complaint I had about the book. This one's my fault entirely: I didn't read the title carefully enough. The book's not really about Burma at all. Burma's more a case study, really, about the colonial influence the British had over the world, and how their former colonies have changed in the years since achieving independence. "Trouser People" are apparently what the Burmese called Europeans. If I had been aware what the book was actually about before starting perhaps I would have given it a fighting chance. I don't like giving up on books. Perhaps someday, in a moment of weakness, I'll pick this one up again and find out that it wasn't so bad after all. But for now, I put it in the pile and move on to something more interesting.

This book makes the following its central thesis: Because popular media (TV, video games, movies, etc.) are becoming more complex, and requiring more cognitive work to process them, they are making us smarter. This is the so-called "sleeper curve." The logic of this argument is identical to the claim, "market heroin is steadily growing in purity, therefore heroin is good for us." HOW DOES ANYONE BELIEVE THIS RUBBISH? It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that its target audience consists of vapid-headed slobs sucking down oreos and 4 hours a day of Joe Millionaire with their globulous buttocks quivering inside their couch cushions, desperate for someone to affirm the worth of their pitiful, mediacentric existence, now would it? See Ryan's review from 06/04 for some suggestions on why Johnson is an incompetent sociologist as well. If you gave this book more than 1 star, you are an unembarrassed dolt.
