My immediate thought after finishing Rash: Huh. For it is a peculiar novel. And I'm still not entirely sure what to say about it. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. However, I think its target audience would love it. That audience is teen and preteen boys, and heaven (aka Barnes and Noble) knows there aren't enough books out there for them. The novel is set in the not too distant future of the United States, which is now known as the USSA (United Safer States of America). In this dystopian-lite future, anything that is dangerous to one's safety has been outlawed: no drinking, no smoking, no contact sports, no fast food, no foul language. Children can't play outside without the appropriate safety gear. Most of the populace is taking a cocktail of drugs to maintain their health and well-being (including Levulor, which dampens the instinct toward anger). The reason for the emphasis on safety is that it has significantly increased the lifespan of the average human. The trade-off is that one really can't enjoy that extra-long life. (And if you think this future is a ridiculous hypothesis, look at national, state, and city legislation attempting to yank toys out of Happy Meals, make walking and using an electronic device illegal, implement Body Mass Index requirements at public schools, etc.) In this society, even the most minor of infractions can be a criminal offense that sends you to a prison work farm. These work farms perform the potentially "dangerous" (by this futuristic society's standards) jobs no one else wants to do. They produce goods and produce, and they also maintain the nation's infrastructure. Bo Marsten's famously short-tempered family knows this first hand: his father (convicted of road rage) works at a shrimp farm and his brother works on a road crew. It's only a matter of time before Bo's own temper gets the better of him and he's sent to a production facility in the arctic that is run by a football fanatic who arranges illegal sporting events for his own entertainment. Because of Bo's ability to run faster than anyone else, it isn't long before he's recruited to the team and learns first hand what pain really feels like. There are a lot of draws here for teenage boys: very short chapters, rapid fire pacing, frequent changes in topic (you'd almost think Hautman himself is ADD as frequently as events and settings change), a futuristic society whose ridiculousness makes it simultaneously frightening and funny, and, of course, football. ** spoiler alert ** I couldn't put this book down it was very easy to be drawn into the book and I liked that. This was also my first trip into the romance genre and it was a good book to be introduced too. There was a solid plot too. The constant complaining of Ruth's age and Garrick's one ball got a bit annoying as it became more constant but I can understand in that type of nature and with Ruth's job why her age would be of concern. I loved the physical details of the electricity running through each of them as they got closer and the constant of their eyes as well. The murder plot with them trying to frame Garrick was really rushed. But I can see how through out the novel, after I was done reading it, that there was a lot of stuff dealing with it through out the book. But I think more of it through the book would've been better. I had just happened to look at the back of the book when in school and was surprised to see "and he's being framed for murder" which didn't come in until the last 50 or so pages. I was happy with the resolution of the book and how they were able to get their happy ending and Ruth was able to conceive. Which I don't see why she wouldn't, she just kept saying she was too old not that her cycle was missing. But I'm being to critical, I highly enjoyed this book and might delve into romance more often.

Er hoort een prachtige site bij, waar je ook tekstfragmenten kunt lezen. Helaas alleen te benaderen met Internet Explorer... De ondertitel luidt: een familieverhaal. En dat is het. Het beschrijft de levens van de nakomelingen van Maria Blumenträger, de overgrootmoeder van de ik-persoon. Deze Maria Blumenträger had een florerende hoedenmakerij, vier dochters, een beetje een sullige man en, niet onbelangrijk, Pfiffikus. Over deze figuur wordt gesproken als over 'de arme Pfiffikus', wat zelfs een familieuitdrukking is. Een van de dochters van Maria Blumenträger is Bettina, zij vertrekt naar Nederland, met haar Nederlands-Joodse man. Weliswaar was hij tot Duitser genaturaliseerde, maar dat werd in 1934 weer ongedaan gemaakt (wacht ff, zou Verdonk het idee hier vandaan hebben gehaald!). De andere dochters blijven in Duitsland. De kinderen van de emigranten (waaronder de moeder van de ik-persoon, Ilna) hebben het niet gemakkelijk. Een Duitse moeder in en vlak na de oorlog maakt hen al snel tot het mikpunt van spot. Ilna trouwt, gaat in het zwaar katholieke Brabant wonen en krijgt kind op kind (veelal wordt niet over 'ik' gesproken, maar over 'wij', als het over de kinderen gaat). Je kent dat wel, met zo'n pastoor die langskomt en in een huis vol kinderen nog maar eens aandringt op nog maar weer eens een kindeke. En dat terwijl de familie eigenlijk niet eens zo gelovig is. Moeder gelooft dat ze 100 % chemie zijn. Er zijn nog steeds contacten met de achtergebleven familieleden in Duitsland. Vooral de nicht van de moeder, Else, die steenrijk geworden is in de schoenenbusiness, komt regelmatig in beeld. De ik-persoon probeert zich een beeld van haar familiegeschiedenis te vormen, waarin ze allerlei theorietjes rondom vooral ook Pfiffikus maakt, een vogeltje, naar ze aanneemt, maar wat voor een? Eentje die luidt zingt? Of juist niet? Gekleurd of juist grijs? En waarom is het 'de arme Pfiffikus'? Haar moeder vertelt niets uit zichzelf, maar ontkracht de thoorieen van de ik-persoon keer op keer: "hoe kun je nou iets verzinnen over wat je nooit hebt meegemaakt?" Zo'n boek dat je wel in een keer moet uitlezen, anders raak je de draad kwijt tussen alle generaties. Mooi! Nog wat ezelsoortjes: 'Hier verschijnt mijn tante Else ten tonele, wier nagedachtenis mij zeer dierbaar is en die, als ik het voor het zeggen had, best mijn grootmoeder had mogen zijn, of sterker nog, mijn moeder. (...) God, dat is Else!, met die zin kwam een overweldigende hartelijkheid ons leven binnen, die door niets of niemand ooit is overtroffen.' '(...), en wij begrepen voor het eerst dat de Duitsers altijd zo dik waren omdat ze de hele dag zaten te eten en te drinken en dat _dat_ nu het Wirtschaftswunder was. 'Te midden van korenvelden waarboven leeuweriken stonden te bidden, onder een strakblauwe hemel zonder Hollandse wolken, onthaald met vorstelijke tafels vol met het zure, harde brood van Duitsland, kreeg de helft van ons gezin onmidddelijk na aankomst migraine. De andere helft had de ruimte om des te geraffineerder zijn charmes uit te spelen en zijn dorst te lessen, bij de eerste slokken van de gouden wijn de kiem leggend voor een eeuwig heimwee naar de latere, overlopende glazen. (...), en na afloop van een paar uitbundige dagen vonden we elkaar met verbazing terug in het binnenste van de auto, vol verschillende, elkaar tegensprekende verhalen, zodat het schrijven van een familiegeschiedenis bij voorbaat een verloren zaak was.' '_Hoe_ we ons redden valt buiten het bestek van deze familiegeschiedenis, maar ik moet vermelden dat ik schrok toen mijn meer dan tachtigjarige moeder, na het achtuurjournaal waarin triomfantelijk werd verkondigd dat het hele menselijk genoom eindelijk in kaart was gebracht, stelde: 'Ik geloof dat we allemaal voor de volle honderd procent uit chemie bestaan.'
