I have mixed feelings about Shadowfall. The plot is gripping and well structured, but the characterization was disappointingly weak. The last few chapters have the main characters giving long info-dump speeches, and all the characters speak in the same "voice." The great tensions in this book were all in the story situations, not in the dialogue or between the characters' personalities. Nevertheless, it's a page turner, maybe worth reading for the plot alone. Each chapter was a cliffhanger and left me flipping through the pages to find out when that character's story would return. I finished the book in two days and am planning on reading the sequel.

I can't say that I was very enamored with the book - I found the narrator annoying and nearly put down the book several times. It took me over a week to finish the rather short book, a really long time for me. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments and some pretty witty wordplay, but for the most part, the book left me cold.

It was okay. The story just went in one complete circle though. She ended exactly where she started. My favorite character was Bartolome! (I'm not sure how to spell his name and I don;t have a copy of the book anymore, sorry Bartolome!)

Which is good, this is a brilliant balance of easy-to-understand and solid-enough-to-have-meaning beyond today. Bourdieu talks about the medium of television from a sociological and journalistic perspective, the risks involved in fast, fast news reports and fast, fast debates, the homogeneity of the medium as such, and complicates rather than simplifies.
