I didn't know what to expect with this manga at all. I knew I'd seen it in stores before but I didn't know the synopsis until I started reading it. This is unexpectedly now one of my all-time favorite mangas. First off, the story is very entertaining and well thought out. I couldn't stop reading for the life of me - it was too compelling. The legend of the Tengu is a new twist on a love story that unfortunately seems to hold some similarities to that of Twilight (both in its portrayal of fatal consequences and sexual abstinence and tension). It is a bit unfortunate that, like most sappy love stories, our main female character is helpless without her supernatural significant other to come and save her, but it is, in the same sense, the perfect indulgent guilty-pleasure. However, the twists keep you guessing, the cliffhangers are intense and there wasn't a moment where I wasn't craving more. Other than Kyo occasionally looking cross-eyed, (even though he's not), the artwork is beautiful. The action scenes aren't necessarily intense, but they are fast paced. The steamy love scenes are a total heartthrob, which makes you wonder just when our leading lady, Misao, will make her decisions. I honestly have to say after reading this one, there are very few mangas that have measured up to this entertainment value for me. The characters and the plot are just too impressively built. The overall series is astounding for a love story and I couldn't be more impressed.

I've been a fan of Ann Beattie's fiction and stories for about 20 years. This latest collection of stories didn't disappoint. She writes with wry wit, creating realistic, often tragicomic characters who are always intriguing.

Since my Robin Hood show (BBC) is between seasons, I thought I'd try a book to get my Robin Hood fix. I had the hardest time getting into this book, and it all felt very vague. Personally, I felt as though Robin was a minor character throughout the story. I liked Little John's character, but there wasn't much else that stuck out. The romance between Robin Hood and Marian seemed off somehow too. I guess that I expected a lot more from this, but was disappointed.

Imaginary Girls is like nothing I have read before. It was bone-chilling creepy and I couldn't put it down. This is a book you have to experience yourself to understand exactly what I mean. My husband grew up not too far from a quarry, so I kept picturing the area as I read about the reservoir in Imaginary Girls - a spot where people have drowned. Ruby has a mesmerizing power, not just on the other characters in the book, but on the reader, too. You will despise her and appreciate her, at least for her love for her little sister. This book definitely will capture the imagination, give you goosebumps.

This was a much more somber visit to Tiffany's stead than her previous three outings, but a good--and important--one nonetheless. There's a lot of character development here, especially with Tiffany and Roland. It just feels like it takes a long time to get going. But throughout it all, Tiffany remains a strong person who does a lot of great things for people. She accepts the fact that life is a never-ending series of choices, not necessarily between 'good' and 'evil' (whatever those are), but just choices. And she's fine with that. "Learning is about finding out who you are, what you are, where you are... what you are good at and what's over the horizon, and, well, everything."

I don't find some of his future spelling conventions terribly plausible (there's a difference in sound and meaning between backing and baking that it's useful to be able to see), but that's my only real complaint.

This book was unsuccessfully challenged in DeLand, Florida, so of course, I went out and read it right way. Sidhwa tells the story of the partition of India through the eyes of young Lenny, who is a Parsee girl living in Lahore. This book is violent. There's talk of rape and sex. And oh, the violence. I can see why some people would want it banned, but it is no more violent than the actual events were. This was a hard book. It deals with this period of time with no background information. I really don't know much about this, so I had to look a lot of things up. The writing style, while beautiful and fitting, isn't an easy read. This would be a wonderful book to teach and read in school. It's dense and layered and the history is tragic, but so much history is. It also really puts current India/Pakistani border clashes and politics in perspective. If you don't know a lot about partition, make sure you have access to an encyclopedia-- I had to look a lot of things up.
