I have a hard time with what Brontë considers as romantic. Her characters are often women who are abused or scorned by their paramours. This one is probably one of her "happier" stories (tongue in cheek).

This is a fun, thorough, entertaining, sad biography of a blaring, raging, tragic (and quite funny) man.

This is very much a beach book. I didn't hate it.

** spoiler alert ** This sweet book tells of Tommy's weekly visits to his grandmother and great-grandmother's house. Tommy is four, and his Nana Upstairs is ninety-four; they have some special time together. One day, Tommy's parents tell him that Nana Upstairs died the night before. They go to her house, and it isn't a Sunday. Tommy runs upstairs, and Nana Upstairs' bed is empty. Tommy struggles with the concept of death, but seeing a falling star reminds him of Nana Upstairs. My husband and I take our daughters to visit his parents every Sunday. We recently lost my husband's mother. Last Sunday, as my toddler ran into her grandparents' living room, she pointed to a chair and said, "Gamma." That chair is where her Grandma sat every Sunday, when we came to visit. Death is a difficult concept to understand, even for adults. I can never reach the end of this book without crying, yet this book is also a comforting story of a little boy's love for his Nanas.

The book A handbook for the newly undead by John Austin is pretty much just a handbook for the newly undead...I know this book because my brother couldnt stop thinking about a "zombie invasion".So anyway there are no probloms or any specific characters besides you as a zombie,...The book is not really suggested to ANYONE unless your a zombie or a zombie fan.

This is one of those books that is difficult to critique because you don't want to come across as trying to comment on the experience. That being said, I appreciated the writing style. I found that it was honest and exact without being too sentimental or emotional in a situation that could easily be that type of writing. The moments of utter anguish and emotional pain came across as real and not overdone. Trying to convey those surreal feelings and experiences is not an easy feat and I found that the way the sequence of events were described made them relatable, in that it's an indescribable thing to have happen. I felt like I endured the journey of "understanding" with the people in the book. It was a story of adaption, not just survival. It was the ability to understand and relate to the logic that the narrator expressed that amazed me. You understand the experience of something but only after you've experienced it; not that I could ever understand what it felt like but unfolding of the events is something I could follow not just accept he telling that it happened.

The reality of this story is stark and unaltered; this was especially clear in the end when I could literally feel Seierstad hoping and wishing that things had turned out differently, especially for Leila. Because this book felt like a novel throughout, I almost believed it would find a way to tie up neatly in the end. I'm not sure how I feel about Seierstad's decision to remove herself and tell this story in a novelistic way. While it makes it a great read, it also lends itself to being interpreted as fiction and makes me wonder if any little thoughts these characters are having might be invented. On the other hand, a case study or series of interviews would not have the same emotional effect and would not be read by the same audience. In any case, I don't think she made a 'wrong' decision, like some reviewers seem to think - it's more that a very different book could have been written than what she wrote and different readers would have preferred it. Me, I'm a fiction reader at heart, though I dabble in a lot of non-fiction, and I think Seierstad is honest in this book - she's a professional journalist after all, and she did her homework by living with the Khan family. Themes: Iran, Islam, culture, religion, dictatorship, war, terrorism, women, poverty, fear, family

Anne Frank is a very interesting character. She had such brilliant insight up until the last 20 pages, where she started to compare childbirth to fighting in a war - "Studies have shown that women in childbirth alone face more misery, illness, and pain than any war hero ever has." She never really tends to consider the fact that you're not in constant danger of being killed when in childbirth. Or the happiness that comes with being a mother. The last entry in the book is a very relatable entry. She writes about the 'two Annes' inside of her. The inner, deeper Anne that's a good person. A very insightful Anne, who lives for the mere glimpse of the moon and is curious about a number of sensitive topics, but overall just needs someone to confide in. A friend. Then there's the outer Anne she puts on. The loud Anne, who's a flirt, who's boy-crazy, but who overwhelms the inner Anne on a daily basis. I feel like this every now and then. How many people actually know the inner me? I feel like I have two sides, taking turns showing themselves. The ending is quite possibly the most depressing, cruel ending I've ever read in my life. After reading about her day-to-day life, about her experiences, inner thoughts...you really get attached to her and her life. Maybe it's just because I like to listen to stories about others' lives, but reading that after all that trouble in hiding, she died of typhus mere weeks before liberation just kills me. I think of what might've happened if they had survived the war. The diary might still have been published, but not in this way. It would've been a much shorter version with just notes about how life was during the war. We wouldn't have this incredible glimpse into another life we have today, but we'd have 7 more people alive and happy. In conclusion, the diary of Anne Frank is just that - a diary. People go into it expecting something incredibly exciting and just find a girl's inner thoughts during the years of her adolescence, living in a small annex to a building, confined with the same people. If you go in expecting a diary, you'll get one. A damn fine one, at that, with thoughts about life and opinions you might disagree with, but respect. I might not have known her, but damn, I miss you, Anne Frank.

Whatever you do, don't read any of the descriptions of this book (including the one on the book jacket) because they all make it sound terrible. Much of this was "five stars" for me, but I wasn't wild about some of the plot choices toward the end.
