this book takes place in DC/Logan Circle, which i love. i love reading about places that i recognize and know. It's slowed down a bit in the middle but i'm curious to see where it goes.

Predictable, but still enjoyable. The puzzles were fun and weren't necessary to solve in order to enjoy the book. I'd recommend this for a boy who didn't want to read The Red Blazer Girls series or any child who likes mysteries.

Like many people, I'm not sure what to think of this book. I originally picked it up just because of its beautiful cover art. I enjoyed the way the story was told by all the different narrators, but at the same time, part of me would have liked to have heard Athena's point of view. I think her head would have been an interesting place to be. I think we're all attracted to people who follow their own path regardless of conventions, but (not being that person, I guess) it doesn't seem like it always works out that well in real life. That being said, the calligraphy chapters especially struck a nerve with me. I think I also have trouble with "the blank spaces".

I am a rabid Sinophile and a lover of Theroux's travel writing so this book is a perfect combination for me. He is older now and less able to withstand the physical and emotional impact of his journeys. As a result his recording becomes somewhat jaundiced. Having travelled on some Chinese trains (soft class only, being a pampered gwailo) I do have some sympathy for his plight. I read this book before and after my travels in China and enjoyed it even more the second time. I just wish I could write like him.

Maybe it's because I'm around the same age, grew up in the same area, and have had or have friends/family that have had similar life experiences but, this is was great. I love the sarcastic humor, intentional or not and this story, memoir has touched a nerve in me. I've read that some readers say that it has the feel of a high school report, and yes at times it does but, it's an honest look at the state of our country that few have had the voice to announce. It's a candid look at a man caught between grief and finding himself, challenging the norms or abiding by the road less traveled. It's the kind of read that explains what happens when you decide to find yourself regardless of the convention that others expect.

I liked this book. I would have liked it even better if there had been one character who was really a great example of the handbook. Especially considering the author of the handbook meets the woman who makes him want to change his way. I also would not recommend this book unless you are a believer. Jackson makes more references to religion than in any of her books I've read and I believe I've ready 95% of them.

This is one of the few books by Jinyong that's available in English (legit). If you're not used to the Chinese names it can get confusing, and the serialized structure is another thing to get used to. But the story is very exciting and very touching in a way that Western genre novels are often not.
