while if i were to meet this protagonist at a party in the east village or williamsburg, brooklyn, i might roll my eyes and plea for rescue from a friend, i cherished the voice as the narrator of this story. it was fresh and poignant and self-depracating enough to force me to invest. i haven't read this in years, but would love to read it again. particularly now that i live in the city where it takes place, for the most part.

Very interesting (and tragic) situation that this family is going through. Gut wrenchingly sad. I enjoyed the way each chapter was written from different characters' perspectives, and how even the fonts changed to reflect their different personalities. Cool touch. This is my first of Picoult's books, and I while I would consider this one a good read, I can't say I'm in a hurry to go read another by the same author. I don't want to cry that hard again for a good long while.

George would have done better to write a non-fiction book conveying what she's learned about the behavior of wild cats . I didn't find the story or the characters that engaging. They seemed to be a ruse to teach about cat behavior.

This was one that I couldn't put down. The way that it's written (like the way the kid's mind works) is everything all at once and fast. A quick pace for the plot and a slightly frustrating character: you want him to do well and he keeps falling down (metaphorically speaking). He also reminded me a bit of a friend of mine, so that kept things entertaining as well. I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested or knows anyone who is autistic or highly intelligent.
