I think this could have been a very jarring book had I not seen the movie Goodfellas so many times I practically have it memorized. As with the Godfather book/film, Goodfellas is an extremely faithful representation of Wiseguy. As many people have pointed out previously, what sets this book apart is the outright bluntness in the delivery. It wastes no time trying to water the cold, hard facts down or romanticize the lifestyle of a mafioso. We're talking about people who would murder their best friends and probably not feel too guilty about it afterward. It's a very chilling thought and it makes Henry's desire to want to be a part of the life absolutely mystifying. This is a well-written, no-nonsense book that holds the reader by the throat from start to finish.

I'm fascinated by the hardships the Ingalls family endured, yet they had a zest for life. This bio was a bit depressing as Laura had much bad luck in her life. But I think this is due to the biographer not being able to convey her personal joys and every day living. It's much easier to write about the hardships which stand out more. I would recommend this bio to anyone interested in how America was settled and what pioneer life was like.

I like this cookbook mostly because the "Mediterranean diet" is so popular for its health promoting benefits, but most Mediterranean diet cookbooks contain at least some animal products and those aren’t that healthy. These recipes are 100% vegan and healthy. The book isn’t at all fancy and I find it somewhat difficult to read as it’s pretty much straight text. But the recipes are true to the region, even if the vegan only ingredients are slightly untraditional for some of the dishes.
