I actually finished this about a week ago, but I'm still figuring out what I thought about it. I'm no stranger to odd, stream of consciousness works, or prose poems with a dark underbelly, and this book certainly sits in that territory. For a long time it appeared to go around in circles though, with a series of variations on recurring themes that I guess echoed the life of the ambiguous protagonist. Towards the end it dug down into the humus and started unearthing something even stranger, and here I began to really revel in it. It came a little late though. Although I have given it a modest star rating, I would nevertheless endorse it as a unique and darkly troubling reading experience, if that's the kind of thing that you are drawn to.

Hmmmm...I just thought I'd browse my 'to-read' and realised I had read this but not rated it. I liked this but unfortunately it's forgettable. I know this because I've forgotten it. That's disappointing considering the other excellent reviews, but Nora can't keep everyone happy all of the time. I remember feeling it was quite dated. I pictured lots of peach coloured clothes with shoulder pads. Perhaps I'll give it another read some other time.

This is an awesome book that crosses some genres; it's fantasy as well as sci-fi and incorporates a good share of mythology and history. It's a challenging read, but definitely worth it. It's the first part of a two-parter, and I already bought the second book, "Ink".

Since I enjoyed the movie so much I thought this would be a nice place to start reading Gaiman's works. It's a very imaginative work, I love the imagery in his writing, everything was crystal clear, it was an easy read. For me though there were a few things that just felt out of place. The violence was a little unnecessary, not because I don't like violence, because i do, when its in the right place. With the tone of the rest of the book it just stuck out like a sore thumb. Another thing was the ending, which for me fell kind of flat. There was a momentum happening and all of a sudden the engine just let go, things just drifted off and there was no climax at all. Sure, the movie ending worked for the movie and the book probably should have something different, but really the ending was a let down. If he wanted to write this for adults, I think he should have pushed the adult feeling further, but for some reason it bridges between that and something for teens, and that just doesn't work.

I'm kind of surprised that many find this to be one of the weakest in the series. I liked it so much better than the last one, Heat Seeker, which I found so unbelievably confusing. Travis Caine and his former lover, Lilly, had plenty of chemistry that made their scenes very hot. I liked that this one focused more on their relationship. The suspense plot involves Lily's past life as English royalty before her murder attempt and subsequent identity change (when she joins the Elite Ops outer circle and meets Travis). How she reenters her old world (with amnesia after a second murder attempt) after 6 years with Elite Ops is played out well.

WOW! This was so absolutely amazing and not what I thought it was going to be. I avoided it for years thinking it was "killer plants taking over the world 50s B-movie style" but I was fnugging WRONG. If ever there was a piece of literature (or any other media for that matter) that so understated yet made so believable such an at-first-glance ridiculous premise, it is this novel. The characterizations were wonderful. I really knew Bill, Coker, and Josella right off the bat in fewer words without the over-wrought character development that a lot of novels fall prey to. With just a few finely crafted words, I truly knew these people. Sure, it was quite G-rated (which Im fine with but its a little *too* obvious that he's skirting around the sex issue for wholesome 50s sake) and dated, but that in no way gets in the way of its effectiveness even in today's culture. In fact, 50s speak is the *only* thing that dates it; everything else is very valid today (maybe rename Russia to N Korea or something [shrugs:]). I wanted more. I wanted way more. I was sad when it ended. ***KINDA SPOILERS AHEAD*** No, we never find out exactly what caused it. We speculate maybe it was aliens who brought the plants all along. Id rather not know. Because in reality, between you and me (read: "the average Joe"), if something like that does happen, you know we arent going to be privy as to why it happened and that just makes it all the more realistic in my book. And even thought John Wyndham was himself an Englishman, I love how he pokes fun at England for being such a pompous prick thinking its better than everyone AND for poking fun at the US in practically the same breath thinking its the world's saviour. LOVES IT! And of course, I love the little digs at "God" as well. You snuck some really cool stuff in there Wyndham. Wish I had discovered you sooner!
