A great YA Fantasy book. I wish there were more books like this (and I know the perfect addition to this genre)! Though, it did feel to me like the first book in a series, even though there is no indication that there will be any books to follow. The author comprehensively created the world that the characters live in and developed the characters to the point that I was left wanting to see more of their lives unfolding. The book was very reminiscent of a Tamora Pierce, either the Alanna or Trickster series. My only complaint would be that this book was maybe overly character driven and I had wanted more of the adventure story - which is what I hope the future books (if any) will look like.

I was reading this book when the Va Tech shootings occurred, and I had to put it down for a while because of that. Roth asks one of the central questions that comes to mind whenever one of these tragedies occurs, namely: where do these monsters come from? His answer is none too comforting, but altogether realistic. They all to often come from normal families, with parents who love and provide for them.
