This uplifting story may be inspiring to children who feel that they are not as good at some activities as they "should" be. In telling this story, the book relays the ideas of patience, confidence, and rewarding waits. The illustrations, by Jose Aruego are very fun with their cartoonish resemblance and the colors are neat too because they display some texture through shading. Also, the illustrations (or is the really the words) run the reader awry with counterpoint images. The counterpoint mostly involves the Dad "not watching" Leo. The only part that I found frustrating was not being able to tell between the father and Leo most of the time. Overall, the story and images express a strong message about good things coming in good time.

believe it or not, i'd gotten through all my years of school without being assigned to read it. i wish i had a childhood reading experience to compare my recent one to, but i absolutely savored every moment of reading it. i didn't want it to end. and recognizing neighborhoods and streets and stores in my neighborhood only sweetened the deal.

definitely worth re-reading if you're like me and haven't read it since high school. it's been my favorite book of all time since 9th grade so i was a little concerned that i would like it less as an adult but in fact i appreciated it even more. just wonderful characters, story and writing.

In line with Plaidy's other novels, this one is a sweeping fictional history about Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. In my opinion, however, Henry VIII is truly the central character.. though he is hardly likeable so one cannot call him the protagonist. This novel is really about all of Henry's first 5 wives. What kept me from loving this novel was merely my over-exposure to the Tudor era. I think I've oversaturated myself with Tudor-era novels, especially those centering around Anne Boleyn so I was a little less interested than I could have been. This is a classic, as are Plaidy's other novels. They are a good foundation for historical fiction reading. I wish I would have read Plaidy's novels first rather than diving into newer fictional histories which tend to concentrate more on one character or one event.

This was my first Jodi Picoult book and I have to say I enjoyed it tremendously. I had trouble putting it down. I thought that the characters were very strong and very believable. The book revolves around a young teenage girl who is raped. And it does get you thinking how you would react if you were that childs parent.
