A great search into the innate need to survive without any modern conveniences, intelligently pointing out how much work it is every day all day to survive. Also a great tragedy about an excentric mind that might have accomplished the impossible if not for a batch of unbeleivable bad luck.

This is one of the few books I'll stop strangers to talk about if I see them reading it.

This is one of my most favorite books of all time. Anyone interested in Mexico or who has Mexican ancestry should read this book. It is a true story and you will not believe all of the stuff that happens to the two families in this book. Absolutely amazing!

More straightforward novel than the Murakami I'd read prior ( Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) - it's basically a romance story, though still haunted by the loss and longing and otherworldliness that I'd grown used to in Murakami's other works. Start with either of the parenthetical titles, not this one, if you're looking to read Murakami for the first time.

Although not as good as Palahniuk, this author writes in a similar style successfully, which in itself is a feat. This book is a quick, easy read with a lot of memorable quotes, my favorite being the book's opening line: "I was stealing salt shakers again. Ten, sometimes twelve a night, shoving them in my pockets, hiding them up my sleeves, smuggling them out of bars and diners and anywhere else I could find them. In the morning, wherever I woke up, I was always covered in salt. I was cured meat. I had become beef jerky. Even as a small, small child, I knew it would one day come to this."

After a long absence Mr. King is back in the world of the Dark Tower, and this fifth book is one of the best.

I hadn't planned this, but Ethan Frome is now the third book I've read in the past couple of days that deals with imprisonment of various sorts. First I read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which involved a physical incarceration in a mental hospital as well as a psychological confinement, then A Clockwork Orange, where the protagonist was first sent to prison and later imprisoned by his own emotions. Ethan Frome is physically held captive in a country town in New England as well as an unsatisfying marriage relationship and finally his own warped and lame body. Despite the fact that Ethan is responsible for much of his own imprisonment, having made poor decisions about marriage and outdoor evening activities, I feel more empathy for his character than either of the other two book's protagonists. The book is tragic, but it comes as no surprise given a generous amount of foreshadowing by the author. And while the reader has premonitions of doom and misgivings throughout the book, there still exists some irrational semblance of hope. I am glad, though, that the book was not a long one. I can only take so much apprehension in a tragic story.

The Sisterhood was better, but this one explored more difficult relationships, which are real so i guess it needed to happen :)
Really enjoyed this short fable about learning and fulfilling your dreams...great book.
