You know how you sometimes read a book and you find yourself pulling your hair because all you want to do is smash the characters' heads, but that would mean smashing your laptop, which you can't and won't do because you need to know what happens next? That pretty much sums up how I felt reading Mercenaries part 1. This Part picked up directly from the last scene in Special Forces. Mercenaries, for me, will be memorable for how Vadim's psyche was dissected. For those who said that Dan was somehow neglected and seemed one-dimensional, that held some truth. When he became Mad Dog, there's not much to read about Dan apart from his sexual conquests. We also learn more about Vadim's background, but Dan's remained quite elusive. To a point I was almost hating him for not wanting to give Vadim a break after what he's been through. In a way, his response is probably a coping mechanism. He didn't want to accept that such a terrible thing could happen to a person he loves, so he denied him that excuse because knowing that he suffered to that extent hurts him more. That was probably quite selfish (in a way, for both Vadim and Dan), but it's hard *not* to understand their actions. Dan remains this simple BAMF who wears his heart on his sleeves, whose loyalty was never ever questioned even if he was shagging others. As for Vadim, I really enjoyed his little "adventure". It was heart-breaking how he was almost stripped of his humanity and bit by bit became a man again. He hasn't come full circle yet, but the detail with which his mental condition was written was very satisfying. The part where he said he couldn't feel what he was reading almost killed me. Took a lot of courage and strength to do what he did. I also *really* enjoyed the details of his SAS selection trainings XD I read some accounts of BRC, and this reminded me of that and gave me more, especially the interrogations and SERE. Andy, cameo though he was, was a very light-hearted character, quite the adorable one. This is starting to sound like more of a self-discussion than a review so I'll stop here. I can't wait to start on the 2nd part of Mercs.
