Not the groundbreaking post-modern work of Fight Club, but still worth reading, especially if you're into the heavy satire.

Wow, this guy can write! I thoroughly enjoyed this Philly-based mystery full of as many interesting characters are you can ever find walking around the city. Laughs, great perceptions, surprising twists, and depth. This book has it all!

I truly enjoyed this book up until the last twenty pages. It was a meandering story of a girl who immigrates to New York City from Ireland in the 1950's. But, my biggest problem was that protagonist was a Fanny-Price type character without Fanny's backbone. She was not only passive, but also weak willed which for me, as a reader, does not make for a good story. Skimmed the final pages and am now happy to be done with it.

This is a good book to encourage mothers of young children to "keep at it." Rachel Jankovic writes this book much the same way as she blogs: the chapters are short and easily readable, topical, and try to end on a high note. I read the whole book in just over two hours. However, because the chapters are quite short and aren't as deep as I expected, I'm still stuck trying to figure out who the best audience for this is. It would be good for a book study for a group of busy moms who don't have a lot of reading time, or as an encouraging daily devotional, but it isn't a deep parenting manual - and maybe she didn't mean it to be. Although she did present a few questions for thought ("Imagine yourself as your child. What is it like to be him?" is an example), most of the book was a here's-the-dilemma-now-here's-the-heart-attitude-you-should-have-to-go-with-it formula. And if anything, it's a reminder that if my heart attitude is bad, my parenting will be, too.

Re-read for the 200th anniversary and the language still moves me as much as ever. Auten was the Regency period's Aaron Sorkin with the quick witticisms and walk and talks.

I read this book as a child and then re-read it as a teacher to my class. It is a very powerful book about friendship and individuality. I love to re-read books from my childhood, because I have such a different perspective now.
