I half-expected, half-feared that this would be a soft-focus, rosy-hued hagiography of Shapiro's beloved past teachers. Instead, it was honest, critical, inspiring and insightful. I did wonder if Shapiro went easy on herself. She spent a great deal of time explaining her own motivations. Since this was a memoir, there was far less insight into the mentors whose laundry gets aired in here. I liked this, but I suspect I might not like it if I were one of the people profiled.

Rhythm and repetition are as powerful in prose as they are in poetry and music. Arudhati Roi's writing in The God of Small Things is hyper-aware of that. Rhythmic structures dominate the novel at all levels, from the riffs and variations of "If he touched her he couldn't talk to her, if he loved her he couldn't leave, if he spoke he couldn't listen, if he fought he couldn't win," to the larger rhythm of foreshadowing backed by detailed reminiscence that drives the narrative while not pretending to do anything else. The overtness of the structures are perhaps the novel's most interesting feature. Here there are no plot devices disguised as flower vases or casual conversations. The rhythms are out in the open, spoken so forcefully that the reader cannot help but attend. From the first pages the shape of the plot is as obvious as a detective story, a form from which it borrows many elements, though replacing the impeccable logic of the detective with the gradual, associative leaps of individual memory. The book is a mild pleasure, it's story distressing and strange, framed as it is in so many melodic details.

Billy Hazelnuts is the kind of comic I'd give my sister's kids...if I had a sister and she had kids. A very funny and kind of dark fable with some awesome art by Sock Monkey / Drinky Crow man-boy Tony Millionaire.

It is the "incidental" characters that completely make these books. Winter, Phoebe, Nick, the children and, of course, the Ghost. Asa?

I just finished this book last night, so I'm still digesting it. But it's fascinating and engrossing, dealing with religion, morals, happiness. It makes a good counterpoint to The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Blindness by Jose Saramago.

It was okay ..... but not one of the best, even by Dick Francis standards; as usual, much suspension of belief was required in order to cope with bits of the plot.

Third book in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. Another fun book.

Definitely a gripping story, and I liked the structure of it, how he mixed his history with the current day. I only gave it three stars, though, because it was really painful. I usually don't mind sad books or movies; some of my favorite books are sad stories, but this one felt a little hopeless to me. It's probably pretty realistic, because life doesn't have tight, happy endings. I'm glad I read it and that I know a little more about what Sudan has gone through.
