This may be my favorite book. It explains so much about the world before Christianity was mainstream, as well as helps you understand femininity.

This book is absolutely epic!! A must read. You don't have to read the Percy Jackson series before this, but it would make a little more sense if you did.

"My Last Duchess" is one of my favorite poems, and the way Loupas adapted that for this novel is simply brilliant. Great characterizations, authentic attitudes for the place and time, intriguing story....loved it.

One of my favorite all-time books. I cry every time I read this book. Mellony's story is so pure and wonderful. I would recommend this book to any young girl.

So, I officially have another author crush. When I read Unwind, it made me want to read everything Neal Shusterman had ever written because he just had the coolest ideas. This book reinforced that. When Allie and Nick die in a car crash, their souls end up in Everlost, a place for kids in between the living and the dead. I don't want to give anything away--you should just read the book. I will say that the world they end up in is so well imagined and thought out (I love the idea of dead zones, specifically where Mary and her kids reside). This book is the first in a series, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one to see what happens!

I am ambivalent about this book. On one hand, I was constantly surprised and pleased by Ms. Kincaid's original use of language. I intend to reread it especially to keep a list of some of the more rewarding phrases. On the other, I found the protagonist manipulative, with dark ulterior impulses that made me distrust her. Far from finding her honest, I found her cunning and insidious. I felt she might easily murder someone and relate it/blame it on her hardships in her native island country. I would never trust this character with any children. In that, the book rang untrue. We were told many times that the children liked her, but never a word led us to believe she regarded them as anything but a means to a job. I also had no connection to her motivation, which seemed sinister. She seemed to like her employer one moment, and resent her - really resent her - the next. I would understand a bit of that if it was triggered by something, but it was unpredictable, and not in a good way. It left me feeling that the author wanted to show inner struggle, but was inconsistent about it. I also disliked the sex scenes, which felt gratuitous. And the friend was just a pleasure seeking zombie. I didn't "get" her at all. I give it a D- on plot, a B+ in clever language use. I wish I could rate the character likability. I'd give it the lowest possible rating on that. Read this for original use of language. For anyone else, do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Interesting. I've never read Boyd before, so this was fun: a new author. I'm not sure I'll read him again, however... What does that say? I gave this 3 stars b/c I did enjoy the book and I didn't "get the ending" until the end. I learned a great deal about espionage by the Brits in the USA before Pearl Harbor. I liked Eva, Ruth's mother, during the war bit. But there were a few things I really disliked about the book, too: 1) EMOTION. There was none. I missed it. Very weird. and 2) It's hard for me to read a book written by a man from the stand-point of a woman. Some men can do it (and, of course, vice versa), but in this instance... Boyd wrote too much like, well, a guy.

This is a book that gives answers to many questions within human sciences. I loved it because it is a funny approach of very serious subjects and teaches many many things. Well, I suppose one needs to be interested in human sciences to like it...

Yes, this book is number one on my list. I just love the second chances theme. What strikes my attention, though, is the strong tone of bitterness. Was this how Jane felt? Did she feel hopeless? I would give anything to know, and anything to have what Anne and Wentworth have. An excellent book to start with!
