Interesting...enjoyed it most fo the way through, but didn't feel satisfied at the end. Story of a couple families living in Colombo Sri Lanka in the early 20th century - deals with culture, independence and gender issues.

** spoiler alert ** After reading 2001, I was really excited at the prospects the Clarke was exploring. I was disappointed in 2064, but I thought that is was set up for a thrilling conclusion...I guess I set my expectations too high. Clarke is the master of describing thrilling and possible worlds. This is a great wonder to read, but it terms of plot, it seems that the climax happens on accident 75% through the book. It's not that it is surprising, it is that it has little to do with what came before. And nothing is really resolved. The intentions of the monolith seem to take a 90 degree right turn once again, out of nowhere. I get no sense that this book 2064 and 2001 have anything to do together. Clarke is still great.

I loved this book. It was like a novela right out of Echo park.

This is one of my favorite books. It's so bizarre and lyrical and romantic. Read it.

I remember liking this book better when I read it the first time, not long after it was published. Maybe I'm too old, or too far removed from the mid-90s now. It felt dated to me, and I ran out of patience with the self-referential self-consciousness.

I'd been putting this one on the back-burner for a while, as I was fairly convinced that it wasn't exactly going to be riveting stuff. So it was a pleasant surprise to find out that it is actually written in a very entertaining fashion, and gives plenty of info about a whole range of things outside of the colonial soldiering view with which I came to it. So bravo to Porch for that. I'll look forward to reading the sister piece, The Conquest of Morocco, next. Criticisms? Well, in setting the scene the author doesn't really get into the action until about p.100, and furthermore he perhaps doesn't make it clear enough (in the opening part of the book) that the story of the Saharian conquest was decidely non-linear in its progression, involving as it did several, and importantly, rival French colonies, and various different colonial drives over a period of time. I also thought that it dragged a little in the last couple of chapters, although given the scope of the story, in both land mass and chronology, this is hardly surprising.

This story opened my eyes to an era and situation I knew nothing about. I enjoyed reading this and fell in love with the characters. It was interesting to see how they changed by the end of the book, some of the characters, anyway. Now I want to see the movie. . .

Continued fun on the Mississippi! Huck Finn meets...well...Jacky Faber. Nuff said.
