The first part of the book is a wonderful play by play of the final days of Bear Stearns in March 2008. The story of how a firm can go from solvent to out of business in 24 hours and the people who brought it down is both fascinating and frightening. The second part, which relates the rise of the firm over the last 80 years, is also interesting and juxtaposes nicely with the frenetic first part (the second part covers 80 years in the same number of pages that the first part covers a week). The last part drags on a little bit - it overlaps too much with the first two parts and while still interesting, it is not as crisp and tidy as it could be. But perhaps that is to be expected since the book covers history as we are living it. This is not the definitive tale of the economic market collapse, but as a story of one company's rise and fall it is a compelling and meaningful book. I definitely recommend especially for those interested in knowing what the hell is going on with our financial systems. Not for everyone and the author doesn't explain all of the terms of art, but again, worth your while if the subject matter is of interest.

One reason I read this book is because there's a recently very good musical of it (and a hit too). Check it out, everyone I managed to get listening to it, was hooked on instantly, especially girls. Back to the book. This book is rather slow and rambling. Read it if you don't mind that. I think it helped a lot if you know Wizard of Oz story by L. Frank Baum (sp?), because in this story it turns your "Wicked Witch" into a misunderstood Witch (who isn't a bad character after all). In fact everything in this story is tied up very cleverly with the Wizard of Oz story. Oh wait, there's some discrepancies, but I can't remember any right now, and I have to think about it because the plot is rather complicated, especially when you take into account the original story. If I remember rightly from somewhere, Maguire did not only base his book on Frank Baum book only, but also the 1939 (?) movie, which is not the same from the original book.

Pretty confusing and somehow delusional compared to the reality.

This is a great story. An excellent read that makes one think about the nature of humanity and love.

It started out promising. About halfway through it turned into an enormous OOC fest, with strong, interesting characters like Edward, Wicked, and Truth-- and Olaf, for God's sake--going completely mushy and weird. And then for the last two chapters, it wasn't even writing anymore. It was glorified outline. Pity, because I'd been looking forward to what was going to come next after the last.
