Kel, the second female knight in the realm of Tortall, is on her way to the final test of knighthood. Kel had been the first to go as a girl, for Alanna, the first female knight, had posed as a boy. Nothing could have prepared her for the taunts and threats and insults she would receive, even some of the teachers had hidden prejudices towards her. But this was supposed to be over, as a squire, things were supposed to change, but Kel will have to work before things change for her, and for the girls in all of her ealm. With all her friends already squires, the future looks bleak for her. As The Girl, no knight wants to risk their reputation to hire Keladry of Mindelan as their squire. Even if a miracle arrives, Kel finds that some dreams die harder than others. Wow, I don't normally read third person, but Kel's voice is amazing. I was inspired by everything this character stood for. I give this book five out of five stars.

It's taken me months to finish this. I mean finish as in I've read as far as I will, ever. The first third was pages and pages of mundane details about absolutely everything, with just an offhanded remark or two littered throughout that startles you out of the boredom. The second third of the book had many more remarks, even chapters about his true thoughts/actions. This is where I started to put the book down for days at a time. Startling imagery is an understatement. But it wasn't detailed enough yet for me to not come back. I got a small ways into the last third of the book... to the power drill... and I didn't/couldn't finish the paragraph. It was just too much for me. I am woman enough to admit it. It was more painful than someone holding open my eyelids to watch the gruesome parts of Saw or Hostel. It was just too much and will probably stay with me forever. Thanks for that. (Bunny did warn me.) I did give it 2 stars instead of one because I liked the parts that made you understand he knows he's a completely inhuman animal and everything he does from day to day is just to 'fit in', to just appear human - not even normal, just human. That moved this from a gory read to truly frightening. As Pat Bateman would do, stick a fork in me, I'm done.

still reading - but so far, it's a very insightful look at Pakistani life in England, with fine details, nuances and hints that one might almost miss if not paying attention - but still end up with a full picture. lovely writing.
