Since I've suffer severe "insomnia"...I read this wonderful piece of literary genius during the middle of the night. Alice Hoffman has written a hypnotic and mesmerizing novel with 'The Drowning Season'. I was sorry to see this novel end! From back cover: "On a secluded waterfront estate on the North Shore of Long Island, a matriarch named Esther rules over her clan. But in spite of her sharp tongue and manipulative ways, she cannot quite keep control over her charges. Her son, Phillip, routinely tries to drown himself each summer; her granddaughter sneaks cigarettes and dreams of escape. Esther has hired Cohen, a Russian landscaper, to watch over the family as well as the grounds. But Cohen has been watching Esther as well. And his love for her is growing wild enough to uproot them all..."

I don't remember this book that well. I remember feeling physically ill while I read it, and feeling like I didn't have any money to buy salt and pepper to put in my potato soup. I remember my teacher saying, "So, there really is no crime without punishment." This seemed very true. In adding this to my list, I hope people will be impressed that I read it at all. Is that so wrong?

Very enjoyable, and exactly what I needed after so many crazy weeks. I read it expecting a fun, compelling adventure, and that's exactly what I got. The only real reason for the 4-star review rather than a 5-star was the fact that, while definitely enjoyable, the book didn't have any deeply meaningful things to say--again, I didn't expect it to. Lived up to my expectations fantastically, and I would recommend it anyone looking for an exciting way to while away these long, rainy late fall days.

It's great that Barbara Ehrenreich's job allowed her to could go out and report on the situation of jobs in the U.S. it's about time that someone did it. i think she did a thorough job explaining the reality of her experiences while making sure to differentiate that she was not 'really' in these situations as others in the U.S are (seeing as she had a back up plan and money to resort to.) The section set in the twin cities i could relate to since i was also in an entry level job in st.paul. Knowing that people across the country were in similar situations, and her acknowledging the difficulty of being in these jobs made the book that much more enjoyable to read. i wasn't 'grabbed' by her writing style, but i would still recommend this book to anyone interested.

Amazing detailed history. Can't doubt divine intervention after this one! No light reading here.

The last of classic, if late period, Delillo. The Mailer-esque metaphor/summary at the end certainly doesn't justify the length, but as an obvious attempt at a magnum opus, it doesn't fall too terribly short. The casuaul reader would probably be better off reading White Noise, The Names or Mao II.
